my inlaws came to my house for the holidays, and my mother inlaw cooked a dinner for xmas, its been a few days & its still on the stovetop.. she made homemade tortillas & refried beans yesterday morning....they still eat it..i tell them it grows bacteria & i didnt want my kids to eat it. this morning i told her i was going to throw it out & she looked at me like i was crazy! i already told her i didnt want my kids to eat it, & she still gives it to them, i tend to say things in a rude manner, not meaning to be rude, & i dont want to start an issue & my kids not see them.... but im not sure how to get it through her head without starting an issue.... any suggestions?

Bacteria can grow on food between 40 and 140 degrees Farenheit. This is what is known as the temperature danger Zone

Chances are your mother in laws body has built up a tolerance to her bacteria so she thinks it's fine. But your children could get really sick. Don't let them eat there unless you've seen the food being prepared. From this point on try to avoid having to eat there. Feeds your kids before you come.

Yes, it does grow bacteria. And think about all the dust particles flying through the air and landing in it.
Some people think this is perfectly O.K. though. Not me. I was just say, "my kids have rather sensitive stomachs, I really don't want to deal with diarrhea for the next week or so"

I could see if it was the next day, maybe. But not 2 or 3. Take the stale food OUT of your kids' hands and throw it in the trash can. Tell them you like to have your kids eat healthy, fresh food, not garbage left out on the counter, like an alley cat. They shouldn't be over-riding your authority anyway. Be firm. They'll get over it.

If it's been on the stove for a couple of days, it's not good to eat it. You don't know what's going on with the food and stuff. You were right. Soemtimes people leave it out and nothing has happened to them so they figure nothing'll happen to anyone else. It's a very bad habit to leave food out.
I am not sure what you can say without it coming out bad. Try to talk to your husband and see what he asys.

I would throw it out. Search online for site on bacteria in the home and food. Then show your kids...if it is out for an extended amount of time and not wrapped I couldn't convince myself they should eat it. I couldn't eat it...so you know what that means.
Do it when no one is in the kitchen...you don't know what happened to it. Do you?

Your house---your rules. Be polite but firm and just stick to it. Nothing is worth putting your children's health in danger, and unrefrigerated food is a hazard, especially to young children and elderly people.

bacteria is everywhere. in one cubic centimeter of soil, there are over 10,0000 SPECIES of bacteria. Short of a nuclear reactor, they are everywhere, so relax. Most of them around won't hurt you, or they would have by now.
