I got a kitten 3 weeks ago and introduced him to my other male cat, slowly. i keep them apart when i am not home but when i am, it is hard to always monitor everything because my other cat is always roaming the house and he goes nuts if he is locked up in another room. he comes out of nowhere and pounces and scratches my little kitten. besides keeping them separate.. am i doomed to this kind of thing indefinitely? any tips would be helpful.

NO NO NO! To most of the other answers. This is a normal reaction for new pets. The older one is just showing the younger one who is the alpha male. (sort of like dogs do). I have 8 cats and each time I had the same thing happen. I would just let them do there thing but I would moniter so it does not get out of hand. Giving it to someone for a little while will not help. They will soon settle in and get along. (but what ever you do DON'T spank the older one) You have to make sure you give them both the same kind of love and assure the older one with love that he is not being replaced.

Is your older cat a full tom? They can be aggressive if they feel their territory is threatened. Of course any cat can be.
Is your kitten actually being hurt? Cats often play so rough that it scares us but does no harm, just makes sure the youngster knows his place in the house.
The new one may need your help dealing with this if he's less than 3 months, or if he is really being hurt. Although I've rarely used the spray bottle trick, this may be a place for it. Just make sure you don't hit the kitten and the older cat doesn't associate it with you, just the attack on the kitten.

The older cat is NOT playing....he is trying to asert his dominance in the house and letting the baby know who's house it is. I brought a female cat into our home when my male cat was about a year old. To this day, he still pounces on her...mostly play, but they can get mean sometimes. It will get better with time...it doesn't take too long for them to get used to eachother though...and it is normal in the beginning for the 1st one to be upset that you've brought another cat into the home...You didn't mention if the kitten is male or female...and are they neutered?

try giving it to a friend for a couple weeks then bring it back home that might work or you could give the kitten away beacause the older cat was there first.
