As a Catholic, I have never said that I am not a Christian and I cannot remember hearing another Catholic say it.

However like any group of Christians, there are many strong and learned Catholics and there are a few weak and ignorant Catholics.

So let's just blame the statements on a few ignorant Catholics and whenever we hear it, use it as a learning situation.

With love in Christ.

I've never seen that. I've seen Protestants and other branches of Christianity saying that Catholics aren't Christian. I'm always saying that every Catholic is Christian, but not every Christian is Catholic. Most Catholics will say they are Christians. I guess depending on what christian image is being portrayed, a Catholic might not wish to be associated with it.

Catholics are followers of Christ, therefore we are Christians. I have never heard Catholics say that they aren't Christian. Maybe they mean that being Christian is more important that being Catholic, Protestant, Methodist, etc. In the context of the sectarian troubles in Northern Ireland perhaps Catholics wouldn't have wanted to say 'I'm Catholic.' They might have said 'I'm Christian.' I wish people weren't so preoccupied with putting people into pigeon holes & labelling everybody.

Alot of Catholics don't know what they are and they don't understand their own religion, I am a Baptist married to a Catholic. He only knows he was raised Catholic, but never understood the beliefs, he often says Christian meaning protestant or NON- Catholic, Catholics believe in Jesus and are therefore Christians....

I think they get it confused with being a protestant....anything outside of the Vatican...except orthodox. There it is just an argument. And, it comes from a different understanding of what is meant by the word. Catholic to them is the bible. Following a set of rules that have been established as the first organized church of Jesus Christ.

Catholics don't say that because we are Christians. Some few, very uneducated protestant sects created that myth as a means to promoting their doctrine by trashing on others rather than focusing on the purity of truth.

I've never heard any Catholic say that, but other Christians try to say it all the time.

it's improper and incorrect to say that, since like you said catholics are still christians. maybe it was said in the context of something that they didn't necessarily think was christian-like, perhaps half-jokingly.

They just don't want to be confused with all of the bigots who pretend that they are Christians.

Most of the Christians I know don't either. They are just kind of stuck with them.

love and blessings Don
