2 Kings 2:23-24
23And he went up from thence unto Bethel: and as he was going up by the way, there came forth little children out of the city, and mocked him, and said unto him, Go up, thou bald head; go up, thou bald head.
24And he turned back, and looked on them, and cursed them in the name of the LORD. And there came forth two she bears out of the wood, and tare forty and two children of them.

if someone called u a name such as baldhead, would u curse them and ask for 2 she-bears to come out and maul whoever calls u this?

(how does one justify this? - in corinthians, it says if a man has long hair it is a shame to him. why would being bald considered bad?)

Praise the god of love, for if you dare to make fun of one of his fan club members, the bears will come and tear you apart. Of course, god loves you and being torn by bears is in your best interest. Yup.

It has something to do with "Thou Shalt Not Mock The Prophets Of God". A light rapping on the knuckles doesn't always drive the message home. Since we know next to nothing about the people of that town, they might have done more then just called the prophet names. Or the mauling could have happened to less kids and was spruced up? OR it was just a coincidence of the bears and the prophet got the credit/blame. After all, if I"m a prophet of God and you mock me and I say, "I curse you" and the next day you break your ankle, is it me, God or bad luck?

Remember, this was written by a man in a time when they were doing good to have only one God. Civilized, they were NOT!

Gimme a break, people!

The Bible is NOT the Q'uran. God did NOT dictate it to a bunch of scribes.

Basically He decided that now was a good time to get some part of His message across, looked around, found a likely person and noodged him to start writing. When the guy either finished or got too far off track, God inspired him to put down the quill and go to bed.

No justification is necessary. Just think of it as cranky old man who'd been pestered by one too many brats and spouted off in high dudgeon; probably in hopes that they or their parents would get wind of it and DO something about the brats' atrocious disrespect, outta fear if nothing else. God had very little to do with that.

Maybe God was really fed up with those teenagers ridiculing the elderly. I have seen teenagers pick on old people before and if I had the power to teach them a good lesson I might be tempted. I’ll bet the teens showed a little more respect to their elders for at least the next few weeks.

Funny that seems to be the favorite passage of the doubter, but I'll deal with it today because I'm on vacation and have a little time on my hands. The word translated "children" in your quote actually means "youths" or young men. In the passage, Elisha is establishing that he is the prophet, given authority by God, to take Elijah's place. Prophets were serious business in the Old Testament. God repeatedly told people to take them seriously. False prophets were to be put to death.

In the passage in 2 Kings, the people doubt that Elisha is telling the truth about Elijah being taken into heaven and so send out a search party to look for him. The young men taunt Elisha, challenging his prophetic calling. Elisha proves he is who he claims by calling down God's judgment on them. Your issue is with how God chose to prove Elisha's calling to these young men. I trust that God knew what he was doing and that this was the proper response to the hearts of these "youths" no matter how young or old they were.

I would ask for Moby Dick to come out of the woods and maul them.

Then I might believe.

He certainly was sensitive about his bald head.

Unless...the term "baldhead" means something else in this case....
