Spelling variations of this family name include: Gibson, Gibsone, Gibsons, Gipson, Gibsoun, Gipsone, Gibbson, Gibbsone, Gippson and many more.

First found in Galloway in south west Scotland where they were seated from very early times.

Some of the first settlers of this family name or some of its variants were: Ann Gibson who settled in New England in 1635; Edward Gibson settled in Virginia in 1637; they also settled in Pennsylvania, New York, and Maryland in the 19th century. George Gibson settled in Fort Cumberland, Nova Scotia in 1774. In Newfoundland, Thomas Gibson settled in Tilton Harbour in 1823.

Depends on which Gibson line you follow. I have heard we started in Scotland but I have records that trace my line back to Ireland. Robert Gibson who immigrated from there in 1773 and married in 1783 to Mary Stewart.
