Anyone around in the 70's or earlier will remember this. You had to have a dime or else crawl under the stall. I was a young kid so I chose to go under. When did they start using them and why did they stop?

Ha! I remember those. I think you just said it. Crawling under the stall to use it. Maybe it wasn't worth the upkeep, having to pay someone to retrieve 30 cents out of a machine.

In France, they have computer controlled portable pay bathrooms. Kinda like a giant port-a-potty. A couple times a day the bathroom shuts itself down and does an automatic wash, hosing itself down inside like a car wash, and disinfecting it too.

Probably because of ADA, the Americans with Disabilities Act, which requires that disabled people have equal and free access to facilities available to others. Or, maybe business owners found it wasn't worth the hassle: Making change, hostile customers, empty the machines, etc. Probably had to replace the units because people would break into them. I sure don't miss 'em.

OMG...I'd forgotten about those! I was a young kid, but I still remember them. I don't think I've seen one since 1978 or so. The one I remember was in Woolworth's on Market Street in Center City Philly. The worst part was that it was a dirty bathroom. They should have paid YOU for being brave enough to use it!

I remember is the late '40's mom had me crawl under the door. It costs ten cents to open the doo. Then if someone was waiting in line, we'd hold the door open for them. I don't think it was very profitable. Boy, I hope I washed my hands!!
