Recall, God did not choose to make that the punishment of Egypt. Moses told pharoah that the next act of God (after all the peaceful demonstrations) would be to visit upon the egyptions the suffering that Egypt visited upon Israel. As such, pharoahs declaration condemning the firstborn of Israel was the deciding factor in causing the death of every first-born Egyption.

Think of it this way: A cop stops a robber with hostages and says surrender or I'll shoot. The robber grabs for his gun. The cop shoots him and kills him. Are you really going to blame the cop for protecting innocents even if he had to kill to do so?

No, God does not say it was good. He gave us a free will and that is good. It is just people use their free will to hurt othe people, and innocent people are suffering for the wrong doings of others.

God will have the whole eternity to make it up to us if we have suffered here. We are here to help each other out.
