You shouldn't need to buy any extra software (like Ghost) if you are running a Windows system. Use 'Backup' (NTBACKUP.EXE) from the start menu in 2000 or XP Pro. If you have XP Home you need to install from the Resource Kit on your Windows CD (self extracting file called rktools.exe).
However, you will need a backup destination. I use an external hard disk. You can buy a 250GB USB external drive for around £70, £40 will get you 80GB). Make sure you have a bootable CD with your Windows system on it & that you know how to recreate your disk partitions.
There is lots of info on the web, just search for Windows backup and restore (do not get confused with 'System Restore' however. This is somewhat different).

The main thing to remember is that you need to backup to a completely seperate location or disk.

Computer says: Find all your important files.
Computer says: Copy all important files to another partition, an external hard drive, or another computer.
Computer says: Backing-up your data is important.
