Ice! And the doctor will give you pain medicine. And you will probably have to eat puddings, jello etc and no straws! It wasnt too bad when I had it done. But the ice does help with the swelling!

Honestly? Plan on taking a couple of days to live like this:

Eat, take a Percocet, sleep... repeat...

I had all four wisdom teeth removed at the same time, and I don't want to scare you, but it HURT for about 2 days. That was the only thing I could do. After the 2 days, the pain started to ease up a bit and I was able to space out the pain pills and even back off of them and take ibuprofen.

With tooth pain, you're not allowed to use ice or heat to releive the pain, so the pain pills and salt water (which is nothing for the pain, but will help you heal faster) are all that you really can do.

Make a plan to camp out... rent or buy some good movies, a good book, and some Sodoku... and take a 2 day mini-break. The rest will help you body heal, too!

Good luck! I hope it goes smoothly!!

I got all my wisdom teeth out a few months ago. I was a little nervious to, the drugs they give you when they put you under are awsome. I thought it was going to be very painful after but it actually wasnt that bad, I was up and moving around the next day...not doing to much though. It was good having permission to stay in bed for a few days. The only sucky part is eating, no hard or sharp stuff (chips, cookies anything crunchy or anything) but it will all be fine. They heal really fast to. Oh and no smoking or using a straw for awhile either or you could get dry socket.

Ask the nurses (& doctor if they have time) a bunch of questions about what to do... they should be helpful... don't worry if the question sounds stupid to you, they've heard it all before.
I would suggest...
Take vitamins.
If you smoke, DON'T!
Have some nutritious soups or drinks.
Don't eat sugary things.
Take Tylenol only when you need it.
Sleep alot.
If they recommend swishing gently with salted water... do so thoroughly and as often as they tell you to... even if it's annoying or uncomfortable.
Try to walk outside when you can to get some good oxygen in you.
Good luck! Hope you have a quick recovery!

(I had bruises on my cheeks after mine were taken out... keep that in mind... you may want to (alternately) gently ice and warm just your cheeks to promote blood flow there just to help minimize the swelling and bruising....)
PLEASE ASK THEM AT THE OFFICE! If they feel it's a bad idea, just do as they say... they really should know what's best for the patient.

Make sure you make your appointment on a day that gives you a couple of days to recuperate after the surgery.

Stock up the night beforehand. Make sure you buy lots of soft foods. (Ice cream, yogurt, canned peaches, pears, pudding, cottage cheese, etc.) You won't be able to have hard, hot foods for at least 48 hours after surgery.

Right after your teeth are pulled, depending on the circumstances, your doctor will have certain things he/she wants you to follow. Make sure you read the material she gives you about how to take care of your teeth.

Have someone with you the first day you get them removed; you might want some extra help since you will be drugged.

Make sure you always ice your mouth. Your cheeks are going to swell about twice the size they usually are, and this will keep down the swelling.

Have your head elevated with a couple of pillows. This will help with the swelling as well.

Stuff gauze in the holes where your teeth once were. This will help to deal with the bleeding that will occur. Make sure to replace the gauze when it is used up.

Always have some water, your pain killers, and antibiotics near you. You'll want them near you when you need to take them again.

Have lots of movies, games, books, and other things around you.

You will be in a lot of pain, so you want to make sure you have a lot of resources around to make sure your mind keeps busy.

After a couple of days to a week, you should be fully healed and ready to go!

Tips
Watch comedy shows
Have someone answer your phone if it rings
Use bags of frozen peas instead of ice cubes to numb your cheeks--they do not leak moisture and are more comfortable.

Warnings
Do not use sipping straws for about a week. Sipping can result in the stitches coming off before the gum is healed.
Do not spit (if you have lots of blood, use gauze), spitting also irritates the stitches.
Even though you may feel no pain the day of the surgery, it may because the drugs haven't worn off. Take your pain killer as soon as you can, otherwise you might be in a lot of pain before you know it.
Do not drive or operate any machinery.
Be careful of using asprin as a pain killer as it has anti-coagulant effects (stops blood clotting - promotes bleeding.)

Had all 4 of mine cut out at the same time, and also had an extra tooth cut out of the roof of my mouth at the same time.
Rinse with salt water. They will give you Tylenol 3's or something. Keep your head up until the anesthesia wears off. I slept off and on in a recliner for three days. Drank a lot of broth.
It isn't really all that bad. I could think of worse things..........
Good luck!

Enjoy the medication! Seriously, though, I had all four of mine pulled and had heard many horror stories beforehand. It turns out I didn't even really feel much pain. I was playing full-court basketball the next day!

Don't worry about it too much in advance... it probably won't be that bad!

Ibuproffen at regular intervals, as prescribed by your doctor. rinse the mouth/ irrigate the gums regularly to prevent food particles from being trapped back there. I was eating pizza the day after I had all 4 of mine cut out. Not the best idea- but I turned out okay!

Oh, bless your heart! I had my right side top & bottom done one week and the other side the next. All I can recommend is that you stock up on soft foods like yogurt, pudding and ice cream. The coldness felt really good - hot stuff hurt like heck! Buy some tea bags to have on hand in case you start bleeding afterwards.

I wish you well - God bless!!!

Your surgeon will likely give you some Tylenol 3's to take after the surgery. Make sure you follow all of the instructions for post-op care and you'll be fine.
