It would be best if they grew up together from kitten and puppy. If this is not possible, you should only let them have limited time together, say 15 minutes at a time. They have to get used to one another.

Patience.

Never leave them alone in the same room together. Make sure that the cat can always get away. Whether it be to another room or outside or whatever.

I have 2 cats and 2 dogs. My one dog likes to torment my kitties. I have a chain lock on my basement door that the cats can squeeze through, but not my 18lb. JRT mix.

Some cats and dogs can be buddies, othersjust learn to tolerate each other.

Give them time and make sure the cat always has somewhere to escape to.

you can't force it. do you get along with everyone at work? did you move in with the first person you dated? cats and dogs have personalities like everyother animal, including us. All you can do is referee and tolerate the squabbles. If one is alot younger, they tend to annoy the older one. Like sibblings. After awhile, they will either get along, or just stay clear of each other. But get yourself a spray bottle or a squirt gun. It helps to squelch the fights.

Introduce them slowly. Cats are naturally snobbish. Dogs are more rambunctous. Allow them to be in the same room but not in the same space. they will slowly get along.

Introduce them while they are both babies, or at least one of them as a baby.
