Good news! I've been offered a job in Japan and they want me to come starting next month. Bad news is, my expired passport got torn to shreads! Can I trust those "passport express" services to give me what I pay for?

I applied for my passport directly through the Post Office and got it in less than a month, and without paying the expedite fee. I would not waste the money on a "passport express" service. Just get the the Post Office as soon as you can.

It's not worth it. If you pay the expedited fee and include a pre-paid express mail envelope with your renewal application, you will have your new passport directly from the government in about 10 days. I did this after I got married.

Even if you have to go to the post office to apply for a new passport, as long as you pay the expedited handling fee you should get it pretty fast. I got my first passport via the post office a couple of years ago in August (peak travel times) using the regular service and I got it less than 3 weeks.

One of my friends just did it. It took about 10 working days and she was on pins and needles the whole time. They even had a problem with her application (she is married but did not take her husbands name). She had to call them twice, otherwise she would not have known about the hold up. She only had 3 weeks before she needed the passport but in the end, it worked out. Just be sure to call them to check on it.

I had a good experience with a company that expedited a visa for me. I think most of them can be trusted, but try to check them out first. Sorry, I don't recall who did my visa.
