Well refers to the container along the bar, usually hooked to the side of the bar or ice bin. This is where the most common liquors are going to be stored. You keep your Rum, Vodka, Gin, Tequilla, Tipple Sec, Grenadine, and Lime Juice in these bins. However, it also refers to the liquors being cheap, because they are the ones you use all the time.
If you want better liquor, then your "Call" and "Top Shelf" are more expensive. Smirnoff Vodka would be Call, but Grey Goose would be Top Shelf.
Good drinking

The 'well' is a rack or line of bottles that are easily accessible by the bartender, normally stored beneath the bar in a metal rack.
Well drinks tend to be the least expensive of a particular establishment's menu; but this is relative! If you have any doubts, then ask your bartender. Well drinks differ from 'call' or 'top shelf' in that if a guest doesn't specify their liquor, the bartender (unless they are exceptional, and 'upsells' or suggests a higher-tier liquor) normally the drink will be made with the well liquors. "I'd like a gin and tonic" vs. "I'd like a Bombay Sapphire and tonic" (with two limes!!) :)

Well drinks are those made from the "Generic" or Less expensive alcohol they keep near the bar in whats called "The Well" Usually it contains Bourbon, Scotch, Vodka, Tequila, and Gin, and some mixers.
Call drinks are those made from name brand alcohol, like a "Jack and Coke" is Jack Daniels and coke, etc.

Wells - bar liquor - standard price - i.e. McCormicks
Calls - premium brands - extra cost - i.e. Chivas
Ask was the bar brand is. Sometimes they do pour a good brand & you can judge whether it's worth the extra cost for the premium. Especially if you're doing a mix drink; people in the know silently laugh when you pay extra for a Chivas & Coke.
