BATTERSEA DOGS HOME has dozens of puppies bought as Christmas presents and dumped please at least go and have a look at them before you buy one of your own as any that cant be re homed are killed to make way for the others arriving daily!
Not only will you be giving a dog a good home you will quite literally be saving its life (if you don't live near London check out your local RSPCA,NCDL or other animal rescue places in the yellow pages)

The humane society or animal shelter is a great first place to look. If you have your heart set on a purebred dog, there are MANY, MANY breed rescues out there where you can still get your purebred dog, but will still be saving a life in doing so. If you are determined to get a dog that has papers, DO NOT buy from a pet store!!! Find a reputable breeder (fairly easy task through things like the AKC website), and get a dog with good, healthy bloodlines. Don't just pick your puppy from the paper because most people in the ads are backyard breeders just looking to make a quick dollar and do not care about the health of their breeders or their puppies. Spend a little more in the beginning, and spend a LOT less in the long run on things like vet bills and heartache. Always ask to see the parents as well. Good luck in your hunt for a puppy. Remember though, there are a lot of great dogs at the shelter and at breed rescues waiting for loving forever homes. Also, do not rule out an adult dog because generally you will end up with a dog who is already past the puppy chewing phase, is housebroken, and has some manners (more likely through a breed rescue as these dogs have been fostered and spent time in homes).

If you want a pedigree puppy, you would be best to contact local breeders and also local groups for the particular breed - many can be found on the Internet. They will be able to tell you if an animal is right for you and give you some idea of the health and temperament. If you are not bothered about a breed, go to a local animal rescue centre. These will be able to tell you what commitment you are making, and what you need to do to look after the animal. Don't be offended by any questions you are asked, or if you are asked to show them your home, any reputable person will want to make sure their pups are going to a good place.

If you think afterwards that a puppy isn't right for you, consider giving an older dog a new home. They are often house-trained and will offer hours of fun for new owners.

If you want all of the health problems and temperate problems that come with a pure breed go to a pet store or breeder. Pure breeds are also very expensive.

If you want less or the opposite of this, you can find them at pet stores or some breeders may have "mistakes".

However, a shelter is often the best place to find a dog. Whether it be an older dog or a puppy they often have a good selection. Shelters are not just homes to dogs that have issues they are homes to dogs whose owners had issues. Sometimes people just can't take care of a dog or the puppies it had that they do not want. Sometimes the dog gets old and they don't want it anymore. Shelters are places to find a dog that someone else didn't want. Adopting and loving a dog that might not have that chance is an great!

Start with your local shelters or rescur groups. If you can't find one there, try looking for breeders in your local newspaper, but make sure to inspect them thoroughly before buying! Do NOT even consider a pet store puppy. They will have most likely come from a puppy mill!

it depends, if you want a purebred puppy i would state that you go to a reputable breeder, ask to look at both the parents and look around at the facilities where they are kept, they should be clean and should be free of strong odor. i would recommend finding a breeder that keeps the puppies until they are 9 weeks old, not just until they are 7 weeks. you could also probably find a wonderful purebred at the shelter, but the chances of you finding the breed and age you want is slim, you could also try a rescue team that specializes in rescuing a specific breed of purebred dogs. if pedigree doesnt concern you at all, which is really only important if you want a specific "look" please, by all means go to your local SPCA. soo many animals are in need of homes, plus the advantage of being able to meet the dogs and getting to know each of them ensures that you will find a wonderful dogs that matches your personanlity and lifestyle

At this time of year I would be tempted to go to a Dogs' Home. I am sure that loads have been abandoned over the christmas holidays. It is heartbreaking to think about, isn't it?

The other good thing about Dogs' Homes is that they usually get the animals vaccinated etc., for you.

I hope you find the perfect puppy, and are very happy together.

If you want to get a good puppy from good parents then find a registered dog breeder. It is more expensive but you can then obtain information about the dogs family history (illness, back problemsetc.) and usually meet the parent dogs. The breeder can also give you info on how to look after that particular breed.

A canine rescue, they have puppies too and pedigree's. I'm sure there will be alot of unwanted puppies in the next few weeks. We got our GSD from a rescue and it gives you a great feeling knowing that you've helped a puppy that had been adandoned, not wanted or neglected. You'd be suprised the puppies and dogs that no one wants. Its such a shame.
