I used to live in England and I moved here in 2001. I am starting to lose my British accent but I don't want to because I love it! I know if i move back to England I can get it back in a year or two but that is not an option at the minute. Does anyone know how i can keep my accent?

My husband moved from Scotland to the US about 4 years ago. He has lost some of his accent, but mostly that is so that he can be understood! The minute he gets on the phone with his family or friends... or when we go to visit... it all comes right back.

My mom is originally from England. She has been in the US for over 40 years. Fairly regularly, she still gets asked where she's from. Accents are will change, but they're hard to lose entirely even if you did want to.

So nila4uk, you moved 'here' in 2001.

Just exactly where is 'here'?

It can't be the 'here' where I am, because I'm in Brighton, England so therefore in no danger of losing my accent.

Maybe you moved to Romania?
Or Germany?

Nah - can't imagine anyone wanting to move to Germany.

Anyway nila4uk, (that sure doesn't sound like an English name to me - are you sure you're English?) wherever you are - keep drinking the tea and saying "Jolly good show" and fly the Union Jack from a big flagpole in your back garden - unless you did finish up in Germany.

Don't let the German buggers know you're English.
They are still smarting about being beaten 5-1 in their own country by us.

and something about losing two world wars.

Nah - a Brit wouldn't go to Germany.

You're probably in a place that lives on beefburgers and every one says, "Hey, that's swell, buddy."

Nah - a Brit couldn't stand all that.

Oh well.

Funny We had a player in Tampa who went to England to train and when he came back he had a slight English accent.

the same thing is happening to me. if you can surround yourself with other English people so that you would feel comfortable in doing your little british thing letting yourself go and your accent coming out
