Truly tis nobler to suffer the slings and arrows of TiVo than to think naught on HD.

HD will give you four times the resolution of a standard TV set, provided that the input is similarly matched. So this will mean with a DVD player that can 'upscale' the pictures you will notice an improvement in the overall picture. However, HD sets will only come into their own if you have a picture that was designed for it - so think about Sky HD pictures or a HD DVD player (either HD-DVD or Blu-Ray).

There is a limited amount of film and programming available in HD at present, so you will not necessarily get the best from the format at the moment. HD broadcasts also have differing quality of broadcasts (so even a Sky HD broadcast will not necessarily produce the very best pictures a HD set is capable of). HD will also provide you with the capability to receive better sound quality.

Eventually all analogue TV signals will be switched off sometime between 2009 and 2012 in the UK, so a move to digital TV will be needed. A Freeview box on a standard TV will ensure that you can continue to receive terrestrial transmissions, and a HD receiver is not a necessity for the digital changeover.

On the flipside, some HD sets have been criticised for being more energy hungry than traditional sets that they replace - which is an environmental consideration, and one for your energy bills!

HD provides a much better picture quality and is better for the eyes. You could also purchase LCD or Plasma.

I am going to wait. At the mo there aren't many HDTV broadcasts.
when everyone else buys up the HDTVs for 800+ then I will walk in and buy one for 200 and laugh as I get to watch all the channels on HDTV straight away.
Man, a new toy is one you got to play with, how do you do that with only four or five channels playing re runs of pants programmes to death all day

Yes, do it. I just got an HDTV, DLP......love it!! It's the wave of the future. Very shortly, all channels will be broadcasting in HD and you'll want to be prepared.

If you want to waste you money, HD. If you want to be able to do more than watch tv all day, not HD.
