Tomatos are true fruits. Fruits are the reproductive body of a plant and bear seeds. These include nuts, pods, berries, poms etc.

Vegetables include all other plant structures, such as stalks, leaves, roots, tubers, stems, etc.

Plants benefit by having people, animals or birds take fruit, so as to disperse their seeds. In contrast, a plant usually is seriously harmed by giving up its vegetative structures!
