North in the northern hemisphere. It's because the sun hits that side least. The southern hemisphere would be the opposite.

Aye, whichever side has the best environment.
The problem seems to be that most people don't know the difference between moss and lichen.
In, Oklahoma, the prevailing winds are from the south- which dries out moss. Thus, in OK, moss is found on the north side of trees. On the other hand, lichen can stand the wind and is found on all sides of a tree.

That is a function of where the tree is in the world. But yes northern hemisphere moss grows on the north side of trees but I have seen moss growing all around trees before.

The idea that moss grows on the north side of
trees in the northern hemisphere may be largely a
myth. Moss will grow anywhere on a tree if the
moisture conditions are right. I have seen trees
completely covered by moss all around. Maybe
it does grow mostly on the north side, but that is
no indication that it won't grow elsewhere. I've
not attempted to check on this, myself, but I
wouldn't rely on it if I were lost.

Moss, once the scourge of the Arctic, was banished long ago by the Ice King. Moss so loved the northern cool climes that it decided to grow everywhere, covering landscapes far and wide with lush green. But the harsh Ice King declared that his kingdom would gleam in white and not green, the color favored by Moss. With this decree, the ice caps began to grow and glaciers began to flow south, wiping clean the earth for the Ice King. Moss could do nothing but run to the south, where it was forced to hide in the shadows. Moss still yearns to return to the land of the north and reminds us daily by growing on the north side of trees, hill sides, and rocks.
