I use a program called DVD Shrink to make a disk image and Alcohol 120% to burn the image onto the actual DVD.

DVD shrink will compress the data from the source disc to make it fit on a DVD. The higher the compression, the worse the quality, so a disc with multiple versions, lots of special features, dual-layer format, etc will look bad (eg: Aliens, Finiding Nemo, and Wizard of Oz all came out pretty bad.)
Also, newer movies may not work due to new copy protection schemes. I only use this to copy movies I already own on VHS.

The easiest DVD ripping software is 1clickdvdcopy. I have several friends and family members who are completely computer illiterate and use this puppy with ease. It's a little expensive but since I don't get any phone or IMs and only praise when asked, I gave a copy to my cousin who drove me crazy with Nero question. She loves it.
You can rip only the movie or leave in what you want. Easy. All you need to go with it is DVD43 so you can rip protected movies. DVD43 is free.
I use 1Click Pro for ripping and burning movies. Nero was good, but edition 7 is so buggy it'll drive you crazy. I just dumped it.

1click for movies, Exact Audio Copy (Freeware) for CDs and Alcohol 120% for data and games. Life can be easy sometimes.

If you want, try bittorrent for a free copy of 1click. There is plenty of info available here at yahoo answers for bittorent.

To avoid piracy movie videos are copy protected. To bypass that protection first go to download.com and download DVD Shrink, DVDdecrypter, and Ripit4me. Start with DVD shrink. These programs are free and work well with Nero.
