but it appears to say nothing about masturbation, yet many church groups forbid it. However, is it really possible to refrain from masturbation. EVERYONE that I know does it.

Church groups are naturally very conservative overall but even more so in that area! They look at anything sexual as dirty and shameful except when it involves 2 married people.

Remember most of them want to believe that Jesus never married, because it would make him less holy if he had sex.

It comes from the Puritan influence in colonial America. I haven't noticed similar attitudes among christians of other countries.

Society may have developed a rule to make marriage a sanctified union. The idea that many tribes of early nations wanted the arranged union of man and a woman must be between two people wanting to start a family of their own. Each family wanted their children to get married to someone who is virgin and untouched by a diffrent man or men or someone they can be proud of to belong.
Forbidding sex before marriage could have been one of them to avoid scandals within families or promiscuities among their children. The Bible forbids that, not because it is only immoral but it knows the consequences it would make like what is happening today where there are plenty of single mother under government or non-profit org. subsidies. Worse, abandoned children, AIDS and many other diseases caused by irresponsible behaviour. Masturbation also included because uncontrollable activities such as that could also cause early sexual dysfunctions. Not because everyone have the capability to do it, it becomes right already.

As with most of the bible it has to do with interpretation. Some people think that where it says not to cast your seed on barren ground is some law against it. But for centuries barren meant a woman unable to have children. It really is the church that doesn't like it. The bible is neutral

the prohibition of masturbation is derived from the episode of Tamar. Tamar was a very beautiful woman who was the wife of Judah's eldest son. He, not wanting to 'ruin' her by getting her pregnant, 'spilled his seed on the ground' whenever they had relations. For this he died by divine edict. Tamar was then given to Judah's next son (a common practice in those days) who likewise spilled his seed because he didn't want to 'build up the estate of his brother'. He, too, similarly died.

Masturbation is thus akin to spilling one's seed and is so prohibited.

The Old Testament doesn't specifically prohibit sex before marriage. They were sticklers about sex outside of marriage.

I don't rely on a document that appears to condone a man having sex with his own daughters as a reliable source for information about fidelity.

The misbegotten translation you are referring to is not in regards to masturbation despite how loud some people may rant. Check out Genesis 38: 7-9. It's about disobeying a direct command of God for a man to have sex with his brother's wife, not masturbation.

Out of context, you have "spill not the seed." This is in reference to men and it helps if you understand actual seed used in agriculture. In fact, the Bible is very blatant about this metaphor. It is about being promiscuous and screwing around, not masturbation. If seed is planted haphazardly, then it grows in places where it may fail. Carefully planted seed ensures greater success. So it's basically saying that if you screw around and don't look after your children, then your children may not grow up to be as great as you'd like. It's good advice from that direction. Pity so many people screw around and suffer the consequences (or that their children suffer the consequences).

On the other hand... ahem... masturbation may be used in ways that are not congruent with the idealized heterosexual "plan" of the Bible. For example, you need to be careful what you pair with it lest you train yourself into some dysfunctional interests. For example, many boys train themselves to have unrealistic expectations of the physical characteristics of women in looking at porno. Moreover, Americans have unrealistic expectations of the "total package" - that is, they have little understanding of what it takes to make the models in their physical shape (continuous exercising to the point of boorishness). In that sense, it might be considered somewhat dangerous, but the religious come at it, being science-phobic, from outside an understanding of behavioral conditioning science.

Logic and scientific observation point to the whole God thing being a fairy story. As such the rule you are seeking to follow, as it does not protect others, does not relate to a legal requirement, does not prevent you hurting yourself etc, is irrelevant (ie you cannot please a God that does not exist). Go ahead masturbate, release the guilt and have fun.

Not that I believe in the Bible, but God killed some guy because he spilled his semen on the floor instead of with his deceased brother's wife.

Sexual intercourse outside of marriage is forbidden, I think that the fantasizing that usually goes along with masturbation is the sin. I could be wrong.
