Camouflage. As most people have said already, it's to assist Soldiers to blend in with their surroundings, for example, dark green/ loam color for woodland camouflage. BUT, not many contemporary Soldiers use face camouflage anymore, due to the current operating environment.

Humans are accustomed to and easily recognizes the human face, so Soldiers camouflage their face to break up and disguise the shape, dark colors on the high spots, nose and cheeks, and light color on the low areas, such as around eyes.

The painting of faces is to complete a camouflage effect. After all, what good is camouflage , especially amongst white guys, if they do all that work to hide their profile in the bush only to have two beady eyes jutting out of a pasty, white face.

This brings to mind the black troops of WWII, when they first entered Great Britain. Up until then, the Brits had very little envolvment with black people! The enterprising blacks explained to the Brits, they were American night fighters!

Soldiers paint their face so that they can hide better from the enemy. They normally pick 2-3 different colors to use. The darker colors are used on the high points of your face such as your cheek bones, forehead, ears, nose, and chin. and the lighter color will fill in the areas around the eyes. they will blend both on the neck.
they will not only paint their face. they will paint any part of their body that their skin shows. including neck, ears, and hands.

It is camo...We are using different colors to better dissapear in the background.

We use at least 2 colours; often 3.

You need to darken the brighter part of your face and make a little green the darkest part of your face.

Here in Belgium, we are using what is called a "S-face" : You put green all over your face (also on your ears and on your neck) and then, with a black stick, you do a big S where the center is on your nose.

Camouflage

The Face is very recognizable when in the woods, close to the ground. You paint your face to break up those patterns. Some specific areas like the eyes, nose, and cheek.

A soldier is a legal killing machine when politics or even cultures clash. A kiiling machine needs to inspire dread among its opponents. The streaks of colour is to inspire fear. Earlier the colours were to demarcate tribes. Interestingly, in India where I reside there were the thugees (higway robbers) who were were put out of busines by the British. These thuggies (from where the word thug has originated) painted their faces with white lime went they set about to prey on wayfarers at night. The very sight of them inspired fear. The soldier is not always a robber, but he paints his face to inspire dread. An enemy who is afraid is a weakened enemy.
Therefore a paint job on the face can be an effective weapon in war besides guns and assorted weaons to snuff out life with a clear conscience.

Another reason might be to prevent glare. Painting your cheeks a dark color will reduce sunglare in your eyes.

Plus it makes the soldier look scarier

Part of the camoflage.

If they don't their faces show - almost like white - against the background. Try it sometime - take a picture and the faces are most readily spotted.
