A Dutch Oven is a large covered pot (about 4 quarts or more) - it has 2 small handles on either side. Can be used on top of the stove or in the oven (usually oven safe).
I use my dutch oven for soups, stews and chili.

Like previous poster said, a thick pot, usually cast iron with a lid. I think in most cases, unless cooking outside, that you can substitute a heavy soup pot.

They are usually a large cast iron skillet with a lid on it.The skillets can be found in you Walmart store in camping.They are good to cook in.Lodge is a good brand that are seasoned already.
