Supposedly it's the devil's number. It's mostly superstition.

The mysterious mark or name of "the wild beast"_ the number 666 is a mystery to many and has been speculated to be the mark of the Biblical Antichrist. Others say it is the devil's number. But these and other interpretations are very different from what the Bible says about the beast. The Bible does say that whoever has this mark will experience God's wrath when he brings this present system of things to destruction at Revelation 14:9-11; 19:20. Fortunately Jehovah God, the personification of love and the source of spiritual light has not kept his servants in the dark about this important matter._ 2 Timothy 3:16; 1 John 1:5; 4:8
First we have to understand that Bible names are very significant especially given by God. (Consider examples: Genesis 17:5, Matthew 1:21, Luke 1:31.) So the God-given number-name 666 must symbolize what God sees as defining attributes of the beast. In the Bible, beasts represent human kingdoms or empires._ Daniel 7:2-7; 7: 17, 23. The first beast of Revelation represents the combined forces of all political rule opposed to God in the world._ Revelation 13:7 Another clue to the meaning of the 666 is that it's a "man's number" or a human number as the Amplified Bible puts it. This expression does not refer to an individual human since Satan is the one that has authority over the beast._ Luke 4:5,6; 1 John 5:19; Revelation 13:2, 18. Rather the beast having the number suggests a human entity, not a spirit or demon, but manifests certain human traits. In Revelation 13:1, 2 The Interpreter's Dictionary of the Bible points out that it "combines in itself the joint characteristic of the four beasts of Daniel's vision. _ Romans 3:23.
In the Bible, certain numbers have symbolic significance. For example the number 7 signifies completeness or perfection in God's eyes. For example His creative week comprised of seven days and there are other examples of the significance of the number seven._Psalms 12:6 & 2 Kings 5:10, 14. The number 6 on the other hand is one less than 7, so it is no wonder that the number 6 symbolizes something imperfect or defective in God's eyes._1 Chronicles 20: 6,7. The fact that 6 was repeated three times as 666 powerfully stresses that imperfection.
So in conclusion, from all the clues provided the beast having a human number indicates that governments reflect the fallen human condition, the mark of sin or imperfection. 666 is a fitting symbol of how human rulership has proven to be a failure or deficient in Jehovah's eyes with it being repeated three times to add emphasis to that point. Well, if you are to believe the latest find of the oldest existing copy of the New Testament, then it isn't. According to translations from a Greek copy of the New Testament that has been dated as the oldest existing copy, the actual number in Revelations is not 666, but 616. It doesn't even refer to a demonic beast, in fact it is a cryptic reference to Emperor Nero and part of a political diatribe against the state at that time. The document is not that new, but only in 2005 did scholars have the imaging technology to actually read and translate the document.

Sorry to disappoint. Of course, if enough people believe something is so, it may take on a defacto meaning of it's own. Mathematical concepts are found everywhere in nature, but the numbers and formulas we use to describe those relationships are inherent in man himself, so if we choose to believe that is the devil's number, then for those that believe... it IS.

1. 6 is the number of man, so if someone is stuck only to the man's desire you can call the being devil.

2. At the time of John, Christians symbolized the emperor Nero with the number 666.

all 666 is, is Three numbers, three meaningless numbers. i am not ruling out the possibilities of the meanings stated by various other people but i am saying that it could be pointless. if the 6th of June 2006 was supposed to be the end of the world why did nothing happen, people will believe anything they hear and worry about nothing. but i believe that 666 is not the devils number, i believe its just some crap that's been made up to scare people. although i believe in the possibilities that it could be. until it has been proven, whatever the numbers mean will always just be peoples opinions.

The three sixes have been said to represent many things, including the number of man or the unholy trinity of Satan, the first beast and the false prophet (16:13). If the number seven is considered to be the perfect number in the Bible, and if three sevens represent complete perfection, then the number 666 falls completely short of perfection. The first readers of this book probably applied the number to the emperor Nero, who symbolized all the evils of the Roman Empire. (The Greek letters of Nero's name represent numbers that total 666). Whatever specific application the number is given, the number symbolized the worldwide dominion and complete evil of this unholy trinity designed to undo Christ's work and overthrow him.

Actually, the Bible is the one that originated the idea of 6-6-6, in the Bible book of Revelation. But it must be remembered that everything in Revelation, is pretty much a sign, unless otherwise stated.

"A revelation by Jesus Christ, which God gave him, to show his slaves the things that must shortly take place. And he sent forth his angel and presented [it] in signs through him to his slave John, " Revelation 1:1

What does Revelation teach? That it stands for mankind, not the Devil.

"Here is where wisdom comes in: Let the one that has intelligence calculate the number of the wild beast, for it is a man’s number; and its number is six hundred and sixty-six." - Revelation 13:18

So those beasts, would have to do with man, as well as the number 666.

Daniel 7:17 teaches us that, in the Bible, beasts:

"‘As for these huge beasts, because they are four, there are four kings that will stand up from the earth"

If we let the Bible interpret the Bible, we see the Bible teaches that Beasts in the bible usually mean, kingdoms of mankind, and this number would have to do with mankind, and their kingdoms.

So what does it mean? Well, since the Bible itself says that it is a sign (Revelation 1:1), then let's look and see what we find out about the number six in the Bible.

Six, as a number, is associated with God's enemies. A Philistine man of the Rephaim was of “extraordinary size,” and his “fingers and toes were in sixes.” (1 Chronicles 20:6) King Nebuchadnezzar erected a golden image 6 cubits in breadth and 60 cubits high, to unify his political officials in one worship. The number six falls short of seven, which stands for completeness from God’s standpoint. Therefore, a triple six represents gross imperfection.

Goverments or kingdoms of *man*, that have gross imperfections.

Also, the one poster below me, Curtis H, is in error. I am a student of textual criticism. 616 is actually a variant, found in the Paypri No. P.Oxy. LXVI 4499. But it's nothing more than a variant. It's not what the original said. That is so proven using textual critical comparison techniques, it's insane. That's all, just a variant. Many variants of different types exist. For example, a scribe wrote "She" instead of "He", etc. I have provided a link of what the papyri that the poster is talking about looks like. Using textual critical techniques, it's rather easy to find out what the original said.

The original said: 666

Since there's not really a devil, there's no devil's number but there is text that point to the number 666 or 616 and even 656 as the "sign of the beast."

'666' as refering to the devil is an anti-semitic joke inserted by the author of Revelations.

How so? The letters of the hebrew language also have numerical value. Thus, by adding up the values of the letters of words, and comparing these value to other words or phrases, new insights can be learned. This practice is called 'gematria'. 666 is the gematria of the hebrew word 'tzidkosaynu' when fully spelled out. This word, which literally means 'our righteousness' is a reference to God and, by extension, the Jewish people.

So, what the author of Revelations is trying not to say is that in the End of Days, the truth of God (as taught through and handed down by the Jews) will uproot all you believe and you will come to accept that truth. However, as the author of Revelations could not bring himself to pass this information down straight and so demonized the Jews by associating the number with Satan. The early Christians knew of this meaning and used it as a call to persecute Jews to preserve their truth.

The Number 6 in Scripture, denotes God's separation from man, also the Grace of God in having mercy on man, for his sin. Man is less than God and can never be God. 6 tells you that man is imperfect and is the number found to be indicative of imperfect government, rule and administration.

Man was created on the 6th day according to Genesis and is associated with God's labor to create. The serpent of the Garden was created on the 6th day and 6 is indicative of the worst sin. 6 is the number of Cain the first polygamist, braggart and murderer. Cain's descendants only progressed to the sixth generation.Check out the numbers on the Great Pyramid of Egypt the measurements are multiples of the number 6. Coincidence or mere superstition?

666 as John talks about in Revelation is the symbolic number for the Devil. The Bible often uses the number 7 in reference to God. The number 666 is 3 times short of the number 7. The Devil is short of God 3 times, he is short of the Father, short of the Son, and short of the Holy Spirit. The Devil has no power over our almighty God.
