What are your reasons for why a 16 year old kid should have a bb/pellet gun? Also what would be the cons?

Giving him a bb gun would help him train in using guns for later in life, when he might want to start hunting. Contrary to what a majority of people think, giving a 16 year old a bb/pellet gun will not make him go crazy and just start shooting things at random. First of all, you should know as a parent if your kid can be trusted with a bb gun, and whether or not he will listen to you and not shoot animals or people. The pros of a bb gun would be that it would be a good training tool and it is a good way to get him/her out of the house. The only cons would be the area you live in. You can't really shoot one freely in a heavily populated area, the guns are way too powerful and shoot way too far. I would say to just ask your kid what he is going to do with it, where he is going to use it, and whether he is going to shoot with friends or not. See if you can trust your kid with a bb gun. Maybe before you buy your kid a bb/pellet gun, buy him an airsoft gun. They're less powerful and shoot 6mm plastic bb's. most of them don't hurt much when shot with, but see what he does with one of those, and that will determine whether he can be trusted with a pellet gun.

Okay to the people answering this question my dad had a 22 rifle by the time he was 8 or so and he never shot himself or anyone else for that matter.
I don't see any reason why a responsible 16 year old couldn't have a BB gun. My 5 year old daughter got one for Christmas and she love's it. She knows all the rules that come along with a BB gun. Like always keep it pointed to a safe direction, always wear eye proteciton and always treat any gun as if it's loaded!
We have a rule in our house the same as when I was growing up if you shot something say a bird or what ever you clean it and eat it! I never shot at anything I didn't plan on eating :)

I never had a BB/pellet gun when I was a kid, and it's probably better that I didn't. In the town where I grew up, most of the kids had BB gun fights. I started out with a .20 gauge, and then got a .22, later. If you have a gun that shoots something bigger than a BB, there is less chance of wanting to play with it.

If the 16 old is into firearms/hunting their is no better way to teach him than by buying him a bb/pellet gun. Gun safety needs to start somewhere and it's better to start with you then Johnny going down the street to his buddies house and fooling around with his friend's dad's gun. If you buy him a bb/pellet gun then you have the control to teach him gun safety. So when he is put into a situation involving a firearm you know how he will behave, and he will handle it correctly because you have taught him. Also a bb/pellet gun is a great beginning to larger firearms (shotgun's, riffles, handguns etc.)

If the 16yr old you are talking about is responsible then why not give him a bb/pellet gun. I was given my first a crossman 2100. We lived in the country so shooting and hitting other houses were not a concern. The bb gun is great training for a young hunter. No kick or recoil. teaches them responsiblity. If they show they cant handle it then take it away. I was given mine at 9 years old.

Responsibility would be one reason. At 16 we are legal to drive which is a very tough responsibilty in which 16 years aren't aware of. At that age you don't realize the consequences that comes with driving and responsiblity. I also think that it would be best for him to learn how to use a gun responsibly with his parents. Face it, boys will be boys whether you are around or not. So it is wiser to be confident in knowing your son knows how to handle a gun when he is around his buddies.

Sorry, but all I see are cons! A kid w/a bb gun might be tempted to try to shoot at birds or other animals, or even people if he got frustrated and/or angry enough. Years ago, my boyfriend shot his and it accidentally killed a bird. He felt terrible, put it away, and never took it out again.

It can teach him to shoot and handle firearms responsibly which is important to be a free man, it's fun. If he already has violence issues or a troubled mind then it could make that flourish which is not good and if not handled properly he could hurt someone or himself.
