My Boston Terrier who's almost two tends to go outside and after doing her job....eats her own feces. Does anyone know how to stop her? She's often fed and not lacking in that respect. I'm just tired of yelling at her.

dogs eat poop, it is a fact of thier life, not something that people do, so we find it discusting, you can only stop him when you see him eating it, i have 6 dogs, and have many others in the past, they all eat poop, i just yell at them when i see it.

Here's a little tool that may help you.

Get a cola or beer can and put a few pebbles in it to make a lot of racket. Seal up the top with scotch tape so pebbles can't get out. Attach a wire bail, like on a bucket, by punching two holes in the can top edge and attaching the wire.

Holding the can by the bail, sling it in the direction of your dog, not to aim at him but beside him to startle the living day lights out of him. He will quit what he is doing and run in another direction. As soon as the can hits the ground, your follow through with a deep throated (like a growl) NO!

You may want to make two or three of these so that you don't have to go right out to retrieve it. This is a long distance correct tool cause the dog does not hear the can coming and you can do this correction several feet away.

You will need to be consistent, stand and watch and when he turns to start eating his poo sling the can and yell NO! as soon as the can hits the ground. You will probably need to keep this up until you have him convinced that the world is going to end if he starts to eat his own Poo.

there are many possible reasons as to why dogs eat their feces. in some cases, the reason for this behavior is a nutrition issue. "This habit of eating feces (called "Coproghagy") is common with many dogs that eat commercial dog food. Why? To try to stay healthy! Feces are a highly valuable food, consisting of the dead and living bodies of millions of bacteria. They are an excellent source of essential fatty acids, fat soluble vitamins (particularly vitamin K and the whole range of B vitamins), many different minerals because of the soil in it, and a host of other nutritional factors including anti-oxidants, enzymes and fiber. The feces they eat is of far greater benefit to them than the product peddled by the dog food companies!

If you don’t want your dog to eat feces (and most of us don’t) then you must provide in the diet all those nutrients which are currently missing from your dog’s diet, and which feces supplies. This requires a team of ingredients like yogurt, eggs, polyunsaturated oils, an enzyme supplement, crushed raw vegetables as a source of fiber, etc. "

i don't really know where you could get some info on it. monks of new skete do mention the problem and the various reasons for this behavior.

Dogs love those little tootsie rolls. I tried everything, powders and hot sauce and whistles.

Best thing, walk the dog so the yard becomes a poop free zone or clean up the poop immediately after she gets done pooping.

In over 25 years of dog ownership, that is the only thing that works.

Google Coprophagia. There are lots of methods to try and get your dog to stop, but not all work for all dogs.

One sure way to stop her would be to leash walk her or accompany her outside. Once she goes, get her into a Sit & Stay. Treat her with small food rewards. Then clean up the mess before she can get to it.

Go to the pet store and buy some Coprophagia tablets. These will work to make her poo less appetizing for her.

Hmmmm, how about you pull the dog away from the crap when it's done. If you can't do that then you deserve a dog with a potty mouth.
