Communities pick up grass and yard clippings, farmers plow under the plants of the fruits and vegetables we eat, we grind up garbage and all of these examples are usable for alcohol production. Are we really trying to reduce our cost of fuel or only shifting the wealth it represents?

Because corn is king in the Midwest, and US politics are skewed so that the Midwest holds an inordinate amount of power.

I'm assuming when you say "alcohol," you mean ethanol? So, based on that, corn can only account for 10% of ethanol production and there are more plentiful sources such as wheat and barley and grass and straw, but, I think the bottom line was that the most progress initially was made with converting corn into ethanol and they took it from there. Let's just be grateful that someone finally got through to the political powers that be that something has to be done.

While all these things may be used for alcohol production, they aren't in abundance as is corn. Also corn has a very high rate of return from start to finish.
