Everything depends on context. How old are he and you? Where did you meet him? How often do you see him?

For example. If you are both in the same class in HS or College, get together as study buddies (with some other people). It's social, without being a one-on-one situation. Less pressure that way on both of you.

Is it at work? An organization such as church or a club? Strike up a conversation on some relevant topic. (New company procedures, Pastor Bob's sermon, an idea for the club's fundraiser).

In other words, keep the conversation in context for a few meetings before taking it to a personal level.
