First you have to ask:
How big is it?
If it's small - like a Sony Vaio, then I'd take it. Call ahead to your hotels to make sure they have an in-room safe. Always put it in your safe if you aren't in the room.
And bring along a laptop lasso like this:

You wrap that around some furniture then insert the end into your laptop -- all new ones have a "female" spot for the male end to go into.
The only problem is that some people might just take the furniture apart to get your laptop. Thus - use the hotel safe.
But get one of those cables anyway, even if you use the hotel safe -- use it to secure your laptop to the inside of your suitcase so that some baggage handler doesn't wander away with it, nor someone snatch it out of your bag while you are napping on the plane or train.

I think if you are going to use it very much, then bring it. If you will rarely use it, don't bring it, and leave it with a friend. No offense, but you will be in a different country, some people may attempt to steal it.
