I think people use acronymns in emails for things like laugh out loud and by the way, etc. because they are short-cutting and they know people will know what they mean. of course, the danger is that once you get used to communicating this way, it is harder to do things "right and proffessionally" in a business setting. But that is not what people think about, is it? We live in a society of 'rush, rush, hurry, hurry' and most people have lost the 'art' of writing.

People really just use acronyms when they are chatting because its quicker to get your response in. Especially when your in a chat room!! I'm pretty sure that people would not use acronyms if they had a job that has anything to do with typing on a computer!

Well the fact is when in a casual conversation, or even some business chats the use of acronyms are very useful. To say why use lol, is to question why do we use any acronyms at all. I think most understand the use of lol, lmao, lmbo, rofl, aren't proper ways to speak in a business setting, but it won't stop us from using them when wanting to quickly communicate emotion online, in a casual conversation.

The best answer is because this originated from gamers. For example, if you are in the middle of a high-level raid in World of Warcraft then you don't have time to type out "laughing out loud" because you may be running your character, selecting items, changing weapons, etc. So, gamers type LOL to make it faster. They may even have LOL set to a key binding that they press to make it even faster. That's basically where the acronyms came from. It was intended to help gamers out and make it faster for them to type but stay in the game. It's a time saver basically. It was then picked up by people who use Instant Messengers. So, if you are chatting with a friend while at work but have to type fast because you are busy then acronyms help out in that situation.

I have a computer job and believe me, everyone I know up to my boss's boss uses acronyms. In fact, the idiots are the ones who take their time writing out entire phrases when the rest of us are obviously too busy to type them out. If I'm typing an official communiqué, I certainly take my time to type in proper English. ttyl

Whether you spell it out, or use LOL, it's a silly thing to stick on anyway. Would you ever SAY that? It's like saying "Ha Ha" after speakng. It makes you sound like a nervous nitwit.
