I went to high School with a girl named Emerson. I never thought of it as being a boys name because I was used to her having the name.

Yes, I would think so. It would be a unique way to honor your dad. I think that Emerson is a beautiful name for a little girl. But if you have any doubts, you could always ask your dad if he would find it offensive if you named you baby girl Emerson.

Teri Hatcher (now of Desperate Housewives fame....) has a daughter named Emerson. I hadn't heard that name until I read that - I think it's different, but not TOO different, and pretty for a girl. If you like it, I would use it for a girl. It's cute and strong at the same time.

Of course it is! My friend's middle name is Meldon. I have no idea where THAT comes from... but,

Go for it! These days there is the notion that names per se have no gender/sexual bias.

Imagine naming your child Winston: Margaret (Thatcher) and other less-powerful names spring to mind, but should be tossed away into the maelstrom.

Well... all will come out in the wash or the wringer. I was thinking that "Boomer" or "Jindivik" have cache. Perhaps "Lake", or "Palmer" are acceptable.

For a girl, "Kylie" might be OK. Did you know that it means "Boomerang"?

Love, Paul

Thats a nice name, but it might not be easy for the child to understand or spell. The choice is really up to you, I think it's a beautiful name, and it has a little of your family name in it, so it's a great name, though you may want to have that as her name, to shorten it you should probably go with Emma.

Emerson for a boy, Emerdaughter for a girl!

Seriously, though, it's fine!

That would make a beautiful name for a little girl and a very strong name for a young woman. I say go for it.

It would be a bit unusual, and she might hate it. You could make it HER middle name to carry it on without burdening her with what will probably be interpreted as a male name. But you know, I do think I like it, and you never know---it might be perfect for your daughter. Trust your own instincts.

There's no law against it... but... I think that's a bit of a masculine name for a girl. How about doing a female derivative, like Emily or Emma?
