Have just got a 7wk old border collie and he needs a bath, have been to the local supermarket and they only have dog washes.
Is it ok to use baby shampoo or is there a special type of puppy wash???

It will be OK to use baby shampoo but when you can get to the vets in the new year you should pick up a doggy shampoo. It would also be a good idea to blow dry your puppy with a hairdryer prevents the dog getting a cold this time of the year? This is what we do with our dog.

7 weeks old is too young for a bath. Try instead to use a warm water, lightly soaped (use a regular no tears baby shampoo) wash cloth and just focus on the areas most in need of attention. At 7 weeks, your pup is too young (especially in the winter) to warm himself and a bath is quite shocking to their small systems. Try the washcloth method if he really needs it and wait till he's at least 10-12 weeks old before you give him a 'big boy' bath. We still use Johnson's baby shampoo on our adult dogs. It's very gentle, tear-free and does a great job getting them clean without drying out their skin or coat.

Buy a dog shampoo in the Pet department of your supermarket or department store.
Human shampoo is NOT acceptable or desirable.
The Ph (acid/alkaline balance) of dog skin is different from human Ph. and therefore needs special products.

Go to any pet shop and they will have puppy shampoo. Don't use baby shampoo, it strips the coat of it's natural properties. I recommend you always buy the most expensive stuff because the most expensive (highest grade) in the pet shops is the cheapest (lowest grade) at the dog shows.

dog shampoo will be fine, just take care not to get it into his ears or eyes & rinse your puppy off well. Dog shampoo generally gets less soapy than baby shampoo so it is easier to wash out of furry coats. sometimes i use horse shampoo on my dog because that is very similar to dog shampoo

There are puppy shampoos that are tearless. The supermarket may not carry them, but I know Wal-Mart, Target, and any pet store will. Puppy shampoo is your best choice for your pup's skin right now.

Go to the petstore. There is specially formulated Puppy shampoo that will not be harsh and will be tear-free.

Human shampoo will dry out his skin...
