It usually takes at least two weeks to begin to have symptom relief from antidepressants. Sometimes it can take up to six weeks. Some drugs may work very well for a particular person and some may not work at all. Zoloft has worked beautifully for some people. I tried it but I got alot of side effects like agitation, anxiety, weird feelings and diarrhea. I switched to Paxil and it helped my depression very much and I didn't have any noticeable side effects. Everyone reacts differently though. Many people with serious depression have to try several different drugs before they find the one that works best for them. The lucky ones respond to the first medication they try. It's pretty much trial and error.

I can't remember how long I was on it, perhaps a year. I've been on so many meds it's hard to keep the timeline straight. Yes, it did help significantly. I went off of it because of the sexual side effects I had from it.
In 3 days he probably isn't feeling much different. With antidepressants they say you should start seeing improvement in about two weeks and it takes 4-6 weeks for it to reach it's full potential. However, in my rather extensive personal experience with these meds, ones that are going to work for a person start to have an effect within days of starting them.

Don't ever take the sleeping pills route!!

1. They will damage your liver big time and you can get into serious health problems.

2. You will get hooked up on them and you won't be able to have a normal life any more if you don't take your pills everyday.

The sleeping pills industry is damaging our health by capitalizing on our ignorance, and by distracting people from effective and natural ways to deal with this problem. I had been taking prescription sleep medications [Ambien] for over 5 years. It stopped working and I simply took more. Still did not work. Nights were very difficult - medication put me to sleep but I would wake up after 2–3 hours with a strong sympathetic response (fast pulse, pounding heartbeat, wide awake alert). It was a very difficult cycle to break. I was really in bad shape due to lack of sleep.

After years of struggling I was able to cure my insomnia naturally and pretty fast. I followed the Sleep Tracks sleep optimization program, here is their official web -site if you want to take a look: http://www.insomniacure.net

Ohhh..and Good Luck!

Yes, I did take zoloft and it did help.
I was on it about 1 1/2 years before I got switched to effexor.

Zoloft belongs to a group of drugs called SSRI's, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The way they work is by allowing more serotonin into your brain.

It takes 2-3 weeks for the medication to take full effect.
But when it is the right medication, it is worth it!

I have taken several different medicines like Zoloft. It takes at least a month before it works at its full potential.

I took them (different ones) for about 5 years. I just recently stopped. Not abruptly, with doctors overseeing and by taking less and less.

They do help to a certain extent. If he is seeing a counselor, I think he would get more out of it. These pills aren't magical. You have to take some action for them to work fully.

I hope this helps.

Yes, I was taking zoloft earlier this year. It really made a huge difference for me. The only complaint I had was that my dreams became really messed up while I was on it, but the difference during the day was amazing! I had to stop taking it since I'm pregnant, but thankfully it was one of the easier ones to wean off of, and I haven't really needed it now. I will probably go back on it once the baby is born though to prevent any post partum problems, but it was a wonderful drug for me. Good luck to your bf.

It's what they call a cumulative effect. My experience was approximately 1 month after attempted suicide. When it did build up enough, it kicked my @$$. Good stuff. Depending on how bad your bf was feeling, it may or may not be the zoloft. I really doubt it though.

I have taken about 2 years. It does help. Takes about a month or so to fully have some effect.
One nice side effect you might notice is that he may last longer in bed...
