SD cards and xD cards are NOT interchangeable. There is not a standard card for all digital cameras. They are two specific types of memory cards. In addition to SD and xD cards, there are compact flash cards, and memory sticks (2 types).

If you are trying to fit a specific camera, refer to your owner's manual or take the camera with you to the store and the sales associate will be able to help you.

(I have several digital cameras. Most of them use SD cards, which tend to be the cheapest form of memory. My other digital camera uses the xD cards. I haven't noticed any difference in quality of the memory cards.)

It's not really a question of 'better'.
Many digital camera brands use SD memory cards, and others use xD.

Only Fujifilm and Olympus use xD memory cards.
Most of the other brands use SD. (except for Sony, which only uses Memory Stick).

So, maybe your next question should be 'which is the better camera to get?'
The majority of answers would probably be from cameras that use SD memory cards.
e.g. Canon

Wether buying a xD or SD card it's not a decision you can make. Each camera accepts only a certain type of card, and you cannot use another one.

Maybe you can decide on which camera to buy depending on which type of memory card it can take. But I would only base that if you already had some cards that you want to keep using.

SD memory costs less than xD memory. SD is also more common and is more likely to be available in the size you need. Finally, card readers for SD memory are more common and less expensive than card readers for xD memory.

With the cost of a 1 GB SD memory chip now below $20 on sale, I'd go with SD memory.

It actually depends on the camera, you cannot use XD cards on a camera that uses SD cards and viseversa, make sure you don't spend money on the wrong kind of card, Good Luck!!!

It's the camera, not the media in which the image is recorded onto. A better question would have been to ask which camera do you think is better.
