I have a 13 year old dog. She is my baby. She has lumps all over her (poor girl) her lips are starting to fall, her used to be beautiful white teeth are turning yellow, and she moans and groans all night. After a long day of walking or swiming she gets super stiff. And she has arthritus. What can i do to keep her happy and healthy in her older age?
ps
she is a medium mutt we think part blue healer, collie, springer spanial, mix. she eats twice a day, 2 cups of kibbles and bits.

And dont worry we stopped taking her on long walks and long days of swimming. We stopped when we found out she had arthritus. But she still goes swimming and on walks just not as long.

She is just getting old and needs extra care. You can feed her glucosomine / conddroiton for the arthritis. Powder form is easiest mixed in with her food.

You can also give her some BUFFERED aspirin to help with the pain and arthritis more. It must be BUFFERED! Otherwise stomach bleeding will occur.

My dog loved a heated blanket to lie on to help.

Keep her active but at a slower pace and don't over do it with her.

Most important take her to the vet to decide on a treatment plan for her. It may include adequan shots to help the arthritis-those do work well but are expensive and take time to build up and kick in.

best of luck and take good care of her!

You shouldn't over-excercise her if she's got arthitis (e.g. A long day of walking or swimming).

Just keep her happy and comfortable during her golden years - Make sure she gets her favorite treats and doesn't seem to be suffering. Take her to the vet if anything seems out of the ordinary and keep an eye on the lumps to make sure they're not getting excessive in size - Depending on their location, they can interfere with her organs.

I hope she's been to the vet!! He can definitely prescribe things that will help her. If nothing else, get her immediately on Glucosamine Condroitin. She should have been on that as soon as she started showing the least bit of stiffness. At her age, you also need to be curtailing her exercise a little. She's not the one who knows when she's had enough - she should be able to rely on you for that.

take her to the vet and make sure nothing else is going on w/her but the old age. i have found for our older loved animals that a heating pillow made for our pets help relieve some of the artitic pain.

She shouldn't be having any long days of walking and swimming! She's old and has arthritis...let her take it easy.

dont push her, it is a time in her life that she should be doing whatever, and whenever she wants. think of her as your grandmothers age, she is old and should be allowed to do what ever she wants. just luv her, she will luv you back.

Just so you know...it is very common for spaniel breeds to get lumpy when they're old...just so cancer answers don't freak you out so much.
