As an American you have the right to get a Canadian passport because America is the greatest country in the world.
Ok, so that's like, totally not accurate.
So, you CAN get a Canadian passport if either of your parents were born in Canada, or if you are married to a Canadian, or if you live in Canada as a "Landed Immigrant" for a few years.
If not, try Khasikstan.
If you are concerned about travelling in countries where they don't like Americans, try sewing Canadian flags all over your backpack, get a Canadian flag Tattoo on a prominent place on your body, and wear clothing from Roots, and a backpack from MEC (Mountain Equipment Co-op). Speak quietly, don't be obnoxious, don't get drunk, and say Please and Thank you. No one will believe you are American.

there are a number of criteiria that Passport Canada uses the most important one being Canadian citizenship. You need to first apply for citizenship before you can quailify for a passport.
The requirements for citizenship are not that difficult to prove. If one or both your parents are Canadian then your a shoe in. Otherwise, you'll have to file and wait like thousands of others in the world. Unlike the US, there are no limits to the number of Americans that can apply for Canadian citizenship. The US, however, has a very low quota of Canadians they allow to apply for US citizenship.

No. Passports are supposed to be from your country of origin. However, there are ways around having a US passport and getting into "other" countries.
