What happens is the cat is attracted to the smell of the milk on the babies breath, also the heat that a new born baby puts off. So they might sit on the babies chest and start the pumping action with their paws. It's not to hurt the baby but their way of showing affection. They might even lie to close to the baby covering the babies mouth with fur, some don't know any better. A newborn baby is to weak to push them off even if they had control of their arms, which they normally don't at that age.

No, its not true. BUT cats do occasionally climb into a crib, lay on a baby, or their face and suffocate babies. It's very dangerous to allow a cat to get into the same room as a sleeping baby. Also, some babies may be allergic to cat dander and you don't know it yet. It could cause repiratory problems, rashes, and as I mentioned, suffocation.

So no magic is happening with cats and babies, it's just a bad, bad idea because they can suffocate.

It can and has happened. Kitties like the milk breath the baby has. That is where the term "take its breath" came from. I was very worried about this with my cat when my daughter was born but we did not have a problem. I would certainly keep an eye on things. Watch how the cat reacts to the baby when you are around so you know what to prevent at night when you are asleep.

Unfounded old wives tale. A cat tends to gravitate to the most comfortable place around. Some have actually smothered a baby by laying on its face. The warm breath of a baby is very attractive to them. I read this explanation many years ago and it seems to come up every now and then.

A newborn baby should not have anything in it's crib that might make it difficult to breathe. This includes stuffed animals etc., as a newborn can't push things away from it's face. Best advice, just the baby and the blanket should be in the crib.

Anthing with enough weight placed on a baby's chest will cause the child to suffocate. It creates pressure on the lungs and restricts the flow of air. It's called common sense.

Its possible,

Why take the risk, keep her out of the room, so you don't have to worry,

I had a cat that would curl up next to the baby i babysat for,

the parents didn't mind but it made me scared

This is one of the dummest wives tales regarding babies/pregnancy I've ever heard. Don't people believe in doing research anymore??? Here's a link for you from my favorite myth debunking website: http://www.snopes.com/critters/wild/catsuck.htm

Total urban legend. Cats might scratch a kid, though, so you should keep the cat out of an infant's room.
