Vinyl is easy to clean, it lasts a long time and looks clean after you've cleaned it. We've had vinyl flooring for 16 years. On the other hand, in the living room, laminate flooring now can be very attractive, with the wood grains that are available. Despite the advantages to vinyl flooring, I might be inclined in the living room to go wtih the superior look of wood-laminate flooring. It is also very easy to install. I checked out the price. It was approximately $22.00 per 100 sq ft. It may be different for you at your location because I am sure that prices vary. If it's not too expensive for you the laminate would be nicer.

There are some very convincing wood-grain vinyl floors out there. They come in strips just like regular hard wood floors, except if any damage occurs, you can just zip the damaged piece out and replace it easily.
Laminate is VERY sturdy. I have dropped hot, heavy fireplace implements on mine and it doesn't have a scratch.
If it were me, I would go with the laminate in a living room. It is pricy, but will help increase the resale value, and it will look great with very little care. It is SUPER easy to install, and if you can do it yourself, you can save yourself a lot of money.

I would try to find a good logging mill that makes hard wood flooring. Sometimes you can get it very reasonable. I don't recommend laminates. Vinyl is usually used in kitchens or bath rooms. Your choice though.

It not only depends on what look you want, but how level is your floor. Laminate flooring can only be installed on floors that are within 1/8" level. If your floors are not level you may end up spending more money on leveling your floors than on the flooring.

They both are good materials that have upper and lower end pricing to them. The question is whether you want the tile-look or the wood-look. Laminates tend to be wood-looking; vinyls tend to have tile-looks to them.

Vinyl will be cheaper, but wood laminate will look nicer, and it won't be all that much more expensive.

Neither. Shop around. I am sure that you can find natural stones, or woods in your price range. Check stone yards in your local design district or nearest city with a design district. They reduce huge bulk wood and stone pieces to bring in new limestone and other top of the line stones and woods etc.Having beautiful wood or stone can make a room fabulous. Have fun decorating!.
