I am a 20 year old female and for the last few nights I've experienced a very sharp pain between my shoulder blades.

The pain ONLY happens when I change positions when I'm getting ready to go to bed at night. For instance, I'll be laying on my back then switch over to my stomach and the pain will only be between my shoulder blades for about 3 or 4 seconds. The pain never happens anytime else, like when I breathe in deep or am sitting upright.

I've done some research and they say that in women this can be a sign of stress or a heart attack..however I don't think I'm stressed and I sure hope I won't be having a heart attack at 20?

Should I go to a doctor or just wait it out and see if it goes away? It just started about 4 days ago.

the shoulder blades do have to do with the heart. I would go get checked and tell them when you get these pains but don't put it off as anytime you have a problem with your body and you neglect it matters only tend to get worse.

I wish I had this 2 years ago when I damaged my rotator cuff while showing off. This is very detailed and really gives you the techniques you need to sort out your own shoulder issues and a lot more info such as preventing further injuries. If you have a shoulder keeping you awake at night you'll know it's no laughing matter.

It sounds like a case of fatigue in that area because of repetitive movements such as looking up at TV and back down at a book for long periods of time. You can resolve this problem on your own by just making it a point to change your positions on a more frequent basis.

it could be anything. this is impossible to diagnose. i can tell you to me it sounds more musculoskeletal than cardiovascular. if you've injured anything soreness or pain can result, especially upon movement. but, no matter what kind of answers you get on this site, isn't going to really help. we are not sure. just check with your doctor. you may need a check up anyway. heaven forbid it be pneumonia and you think its a pulled muscle.

I'm a nurse this is lung problems, you need to see a doctor. It could also be related to nerve pain/damage or muscle spasms. This is serious and your body is warning you. Take care

Perhaps all you need to do is go to the Chiropactor and get your back adjusted. Perhaps you picked up something wrong and put your back out of wack.

Or if you carry a heavy purse or briefcase that can hurt your back.
