Hi,
Ms-dos belongs to command prompt that is no icons and friendly used tips and tricks.

At first the ms-dos is an operating system which is used in command prompt

at the beginning of the computers most of the users of the computer belongs to the software engineers that's why they don't have any problems as days go there come another users which are no knowledge of computers they don't have any knowledge on computers how they work for those users apple introduced first graphic user interface

the main features of this system is each should be display as icons,to click and select the icons there is a point device that is nothing but a mouse, menus, dropdown menus and helping icons all are introduced.

So Windows is GUI which is having capabilities of all above introduced

Why we called as a window because each application in this operating system is opened in the form of window
that is titlebar, menubar, and some toolbars
closing, minimising, maximising window
windows is multitask that is we can run more than one application at a time for example we can open and run the word, excel, coreldraw just like that

But in Dos operating system is not a multitask

The users are unable to remember those commands

But software engineers like to work in command prompts

Try this test:

Your PC probably has Windows installed on it, maybe Windows ME, Windows 98, or Windows XP. See how the Windows works with the mouse able to point and click at everything? Open up the Notepad and the Calculator...See how easy it is to get them to start up and use?

Now go to the START button and click on the RUN option. Type in CMD and press on the OK.

That black screen that shows up is MS-DOS. Now without using the mouse or pressing on the top bar, imagine that you are only able to use that one screen (no other Windows are allowed to pop up). You have to start a program by finding it on the hard disk, running the right program, and end it before you can go use anything else.

MS-DOS is a command line interface that lets you run (for all intents and purposes) one thing at a time, whereas Windows is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that lets you pop open multiple programs to be used and running at the same time.

MS-DOS used to also run Windows 3.1, which was the basis for the Windows versions we run today. You would boot your PC into DOS mode, and then run the "win" command to get into Windows, or you would set it up to start automatically (in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file).

In some ways, MS-DOS was better because you always knew what software was being installed on the system and where. With the Windows environment, there are several files that get installed in various folders. After a while, these files may no longer be needed, but they remain hanging around taking up room on your hard disk.

Also, because it only needs a click to start a program and install things in various places, Windows became much more susceptible to viruses, spyware, and other malicious software. MS-DOS had its own problems like this, but it did not spread like wild forest fires. You would usually only get viruses from contaminated floppy disks that were shared between PCs. Of course, home networks and the Internet availability were much less prevalent than they are today, which may also assist in spreading these malicious pieces of code..

Windows environment:- It is a GUI based OS. It is a multitasking OS. It is very much user friendly, so easily can be handled.

MS DOS environment:- It is a CUI based OS & not a multitasking OS. It is also not a user freindly OS so tough to handle.

There're a lots of difference in their environment but the aboves are most important.

That's a very vague question which depends on a lot on your experiance with Windows. DOS basically died with Win98 or ME and was replaced by the 2K and XP command prompt. The biggest difference I would say is the user interface. Hope that helps :)

Firstly Windows has a GUI(a grafics users interface) which makes it more user friendly and more easy to operate by novices, with MS DOS you can do mainly the same things but in order to do so you must remember lots of commands than you will need to type in the command promt in order for it to execute commands.

Windows enviorment differs from DOS enviormnet due to its Graphical User Interface, it is much easier than DOS as you have to make just some clicks rather typing commands in DOS,
the difference is that everytime you start DOS you have to load it files to RAM from a external memory while for windows once you install it in hardisk you can use it just booting your system.
Windows have features over DOS like:
1. Multimedia
2. Office Suite
3. Networking
and a lot.........................

Windows is multitasking, where as MS DOS is unitasking system. Also Graphical elements we see in Windows are missing in MS DOS. Just open a command prompt in Windows and see the MS DOS in action. Inside that command Prompt is all that is what happens in MS DOS. Windows evolved from MS DOS.
