I read an article that talked about how some American families flee to Canada because either the son or husband was in the military and does not want to go to Iraq.
The article talked more about the experiences of these Americans and how they are trying to become Canadian citizens etc., but it didn't mention much about what Canadians thought about it.
Nor did it state what Canada's position was regarding American military deserters.
The same thing happened during Vietnam when tens of thousands of Americans fled to Canada and many remained etc.

I find it interesting that some many people call them cowards. How many of you have or are serving in Iraq?
BTW, the main person of the article already served in Iraq for 7 months, but he determined while he was there that what he was doing was evil - like storming hundreds of residential homes in the middle of the night and scaring the hell out of old women and children etc, so he did not want to go back.
He also said that the military lied to him, because they told him he would be trained on how to build bridges. They even showed him a video about it. He said he never learned how to build a bridge, instead he was trained on how to diffuse mines...

I remember when I was between 10 and 12 years old my family always had a desserter living with us. Sometimes a whole young family. (my parents are still in contact with to this day, they're still in Canada)
Everybody I know, and have ever known have I ever heard anyone say that we shouldn't take disserters. Man we would watch the news at night and thought your government had gone off the rails, a freaking blood bath was going on next door and the Americian Government was seeing commies everywhere, only it seemed it was really only testing new weapons and the power of their military as it was expanding it's dominance and influence. When you see young teenage boys just out of high school with no intention of killing another human being or of being killed We tend not to think of them as letting down their country. NO NO NO. We would mostly say their country, their government is letting them down. Betraying their futures and lives. Welcome, Welcome, Welcome.
Unfortunately your government learns and bullies ahead. We have a little neocon in training as Prime Minister now, who does as Bush says. It wouldn't matter much who anyways your government would punish us econmcly so bad we'ld die if were a total open boarder policy now. We were punished for opting out of an obvios bogus reason to go to Iraq. Even though we did go to Afganastan and we have young men dying their dayly, though you would never know it watching American news.

Not sure what the Canadians might think about accepting our cowards. We have an all volunteer Armed Forces. Unfortunately, some joined just to get the benefits. Now, when asked to do what they signed up for, they are SCARED. Maybe justifiably so. It's a very tough job, but those people should have thought of that when they signed up to get the benefits. I guess once they find out about the absurd taxation up there, they may rethink their decision.

If you want to be a conscientious objector , then I for one , have little problem with it. Muhammad Ali(Cassius Clay) went to prison over his beliefs and still is considered an icon in sports. Running and hiding is chickencrap and they should be deported back . There are legal ways to avoid service in the military. If you do not believe in Wars, fine, take the option of going to jail during the conflict. Deserting to another country is wrong. Period.

I welcome them provided they are going to work while they are here and go through the steps to become Canadian citizens if they plan to stay here permanently. We are a generous country, these people would not have to give up American citizenship in order to gain Canadian citizenship (though I personally dislike this policy of ours).

I think that like in many other ways, it's just another way Americans are using us. Doesn't bother me if they come here, but the act of them fleeing here is typically American. To just use another nation or country for their convenience. Just think of the outcry from them if the situation was the other way around!!
