If you are extremely overweight, you will lose a lot in excess flid as soon as you start to limit your intake of various foods. That could possibly be part of a normal first month's weight loss.
Otherwise, the general consensus among diet gurus is that 2 pounds a week is the max you should be trying to lose. Otherwise, your body's metabolism adapts to such a low caloric intake that as soon as you start to eat normal again, you gain all your weight back.

Common wisdom suggests to expect a weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds a week, so about 4 to 8 in a month.
What is to be understood is that a pound of fat represents about 3500 kcal of energy stored. So if you need about 2000 cal, and start eating 1200 a day, that means 800 kcal a day of loss, and 5600 kcal in a week - about 1.5 lb. You eat less than that, you of course will loose more, but will also slow down metabolism dramatically... and risk missing out on nutrition if you do it long term (skin problems, hair loss, nail breaking and cavities: not too pretty).
Instead, you can pick up exercise: that will increase the number of cal you need every day, support your metabolical rate, and help loosing faster.

When I started on my weightloss journey I lost 25 lbs the first month. I went to the doc and asked if that was ok and she said that as long as I did it by exercise and healthy diet changes then YES it is ok. Be aware though that losing that fast does up your risk for gallbladder issues, so learn the symptoms and be watchful.

I think that is alot for 1 month. 8 pounds is a good loss for that amount of time.It might stay off better.

Twenty pounds in a month is certainly unhealthy. If you are dieting or using another method to lose weight on purpose, it would be good to stop and adopt a healthier diet.
If you are not trying to lose weight, please see your doctor right away. Something isn't right.
