I have no idea what these things are called, but if you know enough about violins to answer my question, you will probably know what I am talking about. The rope wraps around a button at the base of the viola, and I guess that a special cord is required.

YOU CAN FIX THIS EASILY!

Yuu are talking about the tailpiece. There is a plastic "string" called a hanger that connects it to the end button on the bottom of your viola.

You can buy it from a local music store or:

You slip it through the holes in the bottom of the tailpiece. There are little metal clips that will adjust the length for you. You want the tailpiece to hang over the bottom of your viola about 1/8 of an inch.

You can repair it but unless you are an expert you will not be likely to do a good job. That string tensions the bridge and the strings to get the sound when the bow passes over the strings. Find good a instrument repair person because you may have more wrong then you think.

I would try a strong thread (for furnishings or jeans) and wrap it around the end of the looped string.

1. Wrap the tread around the string, several several times working toward the end you want to loop.
2. Loop the string so that it makes a small teardrop shape and then finish wrapping the end against the rest of the string.
3. Tie it or glue it off.

This shouldn't affect the sound or the tension if you use enough strong thread.
