before i got the easy bake oven for my daughter for xmas...i came on yahoo answers and asked about it and everybody, not one said it was bad. I hate that toy and so does my 8 yr old daughter. 12 minutes to bake ONE cookie and 15 minutes to melt chocalate chips...they taste better in my own oven...even my daughter agreed. Does anyone agree with this?

I remember your question and you gave me best answer. I hate easy bake ovens. I think the food taste like crap and the mess is not worth the fun for the kids. You can make simple cakes etc in your own oven like you said with less aggravation. Sorry i should have mentioned that!

I bought my 5 year old son (yes SON) the easy bake real meal oven for his birthday this year. I did alot of research before I got it. I got the real meal only because it was blue and not pink. Yes, it does use a real heating element and take 10-15 min for most items. The plus is that my son has loved making his own things for the last 3 months. It gets used at least once a week.

The mixes are nasty and way too expensive. Instead I bought a cookbook that everything is made with all regular house hold indgredients, just scalled down. It has brownie mix that you make with hot chocolate, etc...you keep it on the pantry and measure a 1/3 of a cup out each time he wants one. All you add is alittle melted butter and vanilla. Also tells you the regular store bought cake mix trick above. You can also use the ready to bake cookie dough at the store. Bakes in about 10 minutes and we top with powder sugar/milk glaze and sprinkles. His favorite is good old english muffin pizza's. (English muffin, trimmed down if neccessary, top with sauce and cheese and bake...just don't pile high) It's a favorite lunch and cooks in about 15 minutes which isn't that much longer than the oven.

Remember it's a toy that just happens to produce a real product. I think 8 years old is alittle old for it. I know what the manufacturer says but I think it should be for 5yrs and up. Of course I am with him watching but he does most himself.

Rules I'd say are:
1- Get it for a younger child if they already have the maturity and ability
2- DO NOT waste the $$ on the mixes. Buy a book or get the millions of recipes you can get for FREE online.
3- Have fun and enjoy the entertainment!

Well I haven't had an Easy Bake Oven since I was a child but the one I had the food was good. I don't have a daughter but my friend does and her daughter got one for XMas and loves it. Maybe its your taste. The reason it takes so long is you know its not a real oven and since its made for kids the oven doesn't get that hot which explains the long cook time.

I had one of the first easy bake ovens made. It was light blue and used a light bulb. It is a TOY. We cooked everything. We even roasted pecans with a little butter in the metal pan. They were the best. I think your expectations were too high for this TOY. Maybe you should just get some slice and bake cookies and cook with your daughter. My memories will always be of how much fun we had mixing and cooking those little cakes in the little pan. In the 60's that was high tech!

Yes, I agree with that, and to believe they even call themselves a "toy".. It has no use unless the child is home alone alot without parents and does not know how to cook anything to eat. Check out some of the other absurd and crazy "meals".. they have spahghetti dinners, wedding cake, and yes..... tuna casserole...How does that company think that that would be on a child's christmas list if they can get it year round at the dinner table, and they would not eat it there. There is no sense in wasting money for an Easy Bake, or any of its little packets that force you to buy more under the will of the child. It uses slight kid advertising and its evil.

Well, hon, what can you expect when you cook with a 100 watt light bulb?

I loved my Easy Bake oven when I was a kid but yeah, it's not the most efficient piece of cooking machinery.

If you don't like it, just bake with your daughter using a regular oven. She'll get the idea and get to spend some quality time with Mom!

Did you know that they aired the Easy Bake Oven bakeoff on the Food network a couple months ago.
Can you imagine the cash money on first place?
I didn't, i think it was 50 grand or something, I maybe off.

My first easy bake back in 89 was a real treat but OMG Yes, it did take forever and a day to waitttttttt forvever for the darn thing to finish backing but it did help decide my future as a pastry chef today.

The point is the child cant work your oven, but can mix and bake their own little treats in their own safe oven.

While you're supposed to supervise its use, its not meant to be a cookie baking time with mom and daughter.

IF you were fine with making cookies with her in your own oven as something special for the two of you, then of course the easy bake was a poor choice.

But for those independant imaginitive kids who want to do things on their own, and play a more real version of house, then its the best there is.

wow...I'm surprised to see all the negativity toward the easy bake. It was the one thing my 4 year old wanted MOST for Christmas, and she loves it....we have already used it twice since Christmas (2 days ago) it was very fun for her as she could do virtually all parts of it on her own with me supervising...that is the point you know....that they can do it on their own...and we made a cake Monday and sugar cookies (6, not 1) yesterday and it actually tasted okay...and it does not use a light bulb anymore....like someone else said, it has a for real heating element...but I think you are expecting too much out of it. I agree with the other folks who said if you want to bake together, then use your kitchen/oven to bake together. The point of the easy bake is to make kids feel big and like they are really doing something on their own. The joy my daughter has gotten out of it in 2 days has already convinced me it was a great purchase.
Plus I had one myself as a kid and STILL remember what great fun I had out of it for a very long time.....like years..... *shrugs*
Sorry it didn't work out for you....

my daughter got an easy bake oven when she was 5. We used it, hated it. hated it more when we realized the stuff tasted bad, took too long to make and was a messy contraption. We threw it away and started baking in a real oven with real ingredients. She loved it and now, at 12, she wants to become a pastry chef.
