I have found that four year olds truly have the attention spans of gnats. They flit from one activity to another, rarely spending more than a couple of minutes concentrating on each thing. I taught three and four year olds in Sunday School for a while and I basically had about ten or fifteen activities that they could do for each Sunday and would change activities as often as needed. If I were you, I would focus on trying to engage both boys at the same time but at age appropriate levels. For example, they could both use playdough or modeling clay to make sculptures or they could use (washable) markers or crayons to draw different things. For the four year old you could get two or three plastic bins and fill them with art supplies, toys, books, etc. and let him remove a few items from the bin at a time and have him play with those items on a "play" mat on the floor (I'd use an old rug). Give him a couple of simple rules like only four things out at a time and he has to stay on the "mat" with whatever he's playing with. This way he's not just sitting in front of the television with his mouth open and he'll be learning some valuable pre-school lessons at the same time. Balance this play time with reading to both boys and encouraging them to engage in active indoor and outdoor play.

If your son has been truly diagnosed as hyperactive then consult your pediatrician and a nutrionist for dietary ideas as hyperactivity is often a symptom of a food sensitivity which can be controlled. Good luck.

Be sure to have some time each day where he can burn off energy. Go for a walk. Put on music and dance. Send them outside to play ball for a while. Go to the playground if the weather cooperates or there is an indoor one near you.

Then when you are trying to work with your oldest, make sure your 4 year old has something to do.
- playdough
- clay
- puzzles
- coloring books or paper and crayons
- PBS Kids or a DVD to watch
- if you are teaching your oldest, give your youngest some worksheets or something to do - practice writing his name or drawing shapes or something - find ways to modify the older child's lesson to include him
- special box of toys or craft supplies that only comes out when you are schooling the oldest

My son who is hyperactive is 7 now but we bought a mini trampoline when he was 4 and he uses it every day. Jumping on it releases some of that "extra" energy and keeps him busy. You might try to borrow one from someone to see if it helps before you actually buy one. Good luck!

it truly is a superb theory. possibly a gameboy or something like that too? you may get gameboy advances low-cost because they are previous. Sucking chocolates and lollipops are a superb one to help with ear popping, because on the decrease back of your throat there are 2 tubes, each and each and every connecting to the interior an ear. I frequently use chewing gum yet i do not imagine which will be too solid for a 4 year previous. attempt to locate sugar loose ones though, because in the different case he would get hyper. possibly some right trump playing cards too? A colouring e book and colouring crayons shoud be solid as well.

2 mins... u must be joking that he is hyperactive. I have one who cannot sit for 30 seconds in one place ...wait wait wait..except when he is watching Tom and Jerry or when he is playing his favorite racing game in our PC.

Try this..find whats his favorite activity... say if he is fond of assembling blocks...find what would he like the most to assemble in that..say a plane..find blocks that he could turn into a real plane... in short find his interest and he may go till 5 min..dont expect more than that..

Think positive about that..he is a very intelligent kid who finishes everything fast...dont curb his insticts

bubbles... outside activities... i used to play flashlight tag inside when it was dark with a 5 year old i used to babysit... get him his own little flashlight and then hide... take turns... it's like hide and seek. you can change the rules around. have him help you make the rules... um other active things... "let's see how fast you can run from here to that tree" ; ) haha -- get a stop watch... sreiously ..... if you're having issues with teaching your other son i would give the little one a quiet time where he has to go in his room or something during a certain period of time. i know simeon LOVED legos. and he was real good at it too

The first thing to do that will help immensely is to eliminate ALL sugar out of his diet completely.
Next, at least double his physical activity level. The best time to do that would be right before you want him to sit quietly.
Lastly, if you want him to be able to work independently, give him an activity that involves a theme he is interested in. eg dinosaurs, trucks, etc.

Hi, Suba. Childhood is like a tiny living vulcano. The child wants to see the outer world, to do what we do and to do what he desires to do. He wants to get experience by seeing, by touching, by tasting and by experimenting. Every minute is a learning moment for him. How can he sit idle? Really you are fortunate to have such a fireball of activity, congratulations! Hyperactivity is a true phenomenon of the growth of intelligence. Don' t make him keep quiet. You keep him active by offering things to learn from the following activities: 1. Play and learn - Give him models of building blocks to assemble, abacus to learn counting, assembling of pieces of cardboard or plywood to make models of animals and birds, painting pictures of outline drawings etc. 2. Sending him to attend swimming, singing and dancing classes. 3. Admit him to any good day care centre or preschools like Eurokids or Kidzee or Montessory. Please don't punish him by forcing him to sit idle. Activity enhances growth and development. Good luck!

teach him how to play basketball or a sport. he can be very active by learning how to shoot a basketball, run, and with his skills without him sitting down in a place for more than 2 minutes, he can join a basketball game and help the most horrible team get to the top. think about it..
