Those who follow some sayings and views of Ali (one of the early muslims leaders), as the rightful successor to Prophet Muhammad , are called Shia. Shia means a partisan (party of Ali) and it started more as a political party to help Ali in his conflict with his political adversaries.
About 90% of Muslims are Sunni, the word Sunni is based on the word Sunnah which is an Arabic word means the Prophet's Doctrine. Sunnis believe in (GOD) as the One Creator and Mohammad is His last and final Messenger.
but you have to know that the sects in islam not like the sects in other religions in other religions1- they can change in their books for example the Catholic Bible contain 73 books while the Protestant Bible has only 66 in Islam no one can change any thing There is not even one word of difference between two Arabic Qur'ans, anywhere in the world. There has been no disagreements in history among Muslims as to what should and should not be in the Qur'an
The Sunnah or Hadith consists of the teachings, sayings, and actions of Prophet Muhammad. This information was meticulously reported and collected by his Companions. It is essentially an elaboration of the Qur'anic verses that shows how they are to be implemented in one's daily life ALLthe true muslims agree about that

I think you'd find the Iraq Study Group Report to be very interesting if you want to know more about the civil war in Iraq. It's pretty cheap too - about $10.
The Sunnis were in control under Hussein and the insurgency is basically a Sunni insurgency that is upset over America's policy of de-Baathification of the Iraqi government.
The Shia were an oppressed minority in Iraq, but with the help of Iran are creating a state of "controlled chaos" whereby the American military is bogged down. The Shia have created death squads that murder numerous Sunni civilians & political figures.
Neither group wants the Americans there. America's failure in the area is not a military failure. There simply is no political interest in Iraq for a government that can provide security. Under such a condition, it makes little sense for America to keep trying, but we should be honest with ourselves over our intentions in the region. Bush came into office with the promise that he'd be surrounded by very smart people, but in hindsight he's been given overly-optimistic advice that was wasn't thorougly researched. And given Bush's reluctance and incompetence at international dialogue and negotiation, it seems the necessary steps to create peace in the area will be long delayed.

The name Shia comes from Shi'at Ali, Mohammads cousin who left with his army when Abu Bak'r was made Caliph. His followers are called Shias.
Sunnis take their name from "one who has heard" or the converts.
I guess the converts are more radical than the originals, since that is usually the case. However, in the case of Muslims, you'll need to have an unbiased Muslim give you the opinion.
I'm not the Expert in this subject.
Incidentally, these are not the only splits in Islam. There are many more factions like the Abbasids, Ayubids, Baha'i, Cutchi Memons, Dawoodi Bohras, Ebrahimi, Fatimids, Ismailis, Marmelukes, Selucids, Ummayads, Wahabis and so many more. And they are all killing each other always!? So, the guy saying that 90 % of the Muslims are Sunni, must be joking!!
Happy New Year!!!!

After Mohammad, the Imams are the supposed holders of the truths of Islam. The problem with this is that each Imam thinks he possesses the correct truth. So the Shiites follow one Imam and the Sunnis follow another. It would be like Catholics dividing up and one group following the teachings of Pope Pius and another group following Pope John Paul Ringo George. Much like what happened when the Catholic church split with the Anglican and Eastern Orthodox branches. If Muslims would all follow only Mohammad and not the Imams, it would make them more conciliatory with each other. Same with Christians. If they would just follow Christ instead of certain church leaders, it would be better.

No shias do no longer worship some guy. i'm Sunni myself yet i'll attempt to describe this to the main suitable of my skills. Shia and Sunni do have opposing perspectives even nonetheless it is not in accordance with faith. The conflict is grounded in a political adventure/result. Shias have self assurance that the Prophet Muhammad pbuh appointed his nephew Haz. Ali as his successor to alter into caliph yet Sunnis carry that with the aid of fact the caliphate replaced into chosen by employing Iman and point of taqwa that Haz. Abu Bakr Siddiq replaced into precise chosen. Sunnis evaluate Ali the fourth and extremely final of the Rashidun (rightly guided Caliphs), whilst Shias regard Ali with the aid of fact the 1st Imam and study him and his descendants the rightful successors to Muhammad, all of that are contributors of the Ahl al-Bayt, the family members of Muhammad. This conflict of words split the Ummah (Muslim community) into the Sunni and Shia branches. a number of Sunni and shia practices fluctuate from one yet another, in that the strategies are somewhat diverse yet basically an analogous. wish that clarified it somewhat. And to any Shia who stumbled on a hollow or a mistake in my clarification, i'm sorry. I defined it to the main suitable of my understanding.

The difference is the interpretation of the Quran. Sunnis believe Muhammed was the one and only prophet and Shia believe there was another prophet after Muhhamed

It's no different than the difference between Catholics & Protestants; two sects of the same basic religion killing each other to prove how "right" they are!
Consider Northern Ireland, if God was real, either the Catholics or the Protestants would have Him on their side & would have achieved a great victory. Allah is no different, if He were real the Sunis or the Shi'ites would already have won.
Why are so many otherwise intelligent people willing to die for imaginary reasons?
