In the early 1700's there was an Act that united England with Scotland. That made it into Great Britain. Then when they added Northern Ireland it became the United Kingdom.

Give Ireland back to the Irish.

With Queen Elizabeth's death and the choice of James IV or Scotland to be King James I of England. He was king of both and they became united. Ireland was added later.
