The pay is the same for same rank/rate. The National Guard has two jobs, protect the state they are in and augment the U.S. Army (many Guardsmen are in Iraq at the moment). The Coast Guard's mission is to protect the coast from invasion, maritime law enforcement, maritime search and rescue and maritime environmental protection. You can live on base in any service while on active duty, in fact during basic training you must live on base. As to picking where you are assigned, they try to send people where they want to go, but don't count on it, they send you where you are needed. The good thing about the National Guard is you are a reservist most of the time, so can live anywhere you want, you just need to be where they want you, when you are activated (sent to augment the Regular Army or disaster response within the state who's Guard you are a member of).

Good luck and keep asking questions of people and recruiters before you make your decision.

Many of the jobs are the same from branch of service to branch of service. While the Army, Navy Air Force and Marines fall under the Department of Defense, the Coast Guard falls under the Department of Commerce. Your chances of being deployed to a war zone are possible with the Coasties but more isolated assignments like the Aleutian Islands are more likely. As the name implies COAST GUARD...guarding the coast via remote radar and radio sites in remote locales and not always places like Alaska.

As for living on base. I fyou are single, it is mandatory until reaching a certain pay grade. If married, you must be eligible for your wife to join you. This is not always possible at all locations.

yea the pay is all the same, you could look at what the promotion rates are for each one. Ive hear the army gain rank quick but loose it just as fast. But thats about all I know.
