You didnt say how a man would put a woman in her place so its hard to answer what I think of his actions.
If a woman is complaining alot, it can be alot of things. You also didnt say why the woman was complaining or the situation around it. I will say that any complaint needs listening to and if you dont want to listen or care to help resolve the problem, then its probably time to cut ties with her and move on so you both can be happier.

I think if a man really loves a woman he would help her not be a bit*h or a pain in the ****.
Hitting or abuse, or verbal abuse are never okay. But insiting on something better from her is. She'd do the same to him.
