Coffee doesn't increase your overall metabolism, but it does cause you to metabolize blood sugar quickly. Coffee has caffein that causes the adrenal glands to excrete insulin. The insulin oxidizes the sugar in your blood and that is what makes you feel the "rush" or "high" from drinking coffee. This is not good for you. Your adrenals sit right above the kidneys and you will notice that you have to go to the toilet alot after drinking coffee. You will notice that if you don't keep drinking coffee, you will have a headache or feel a drop in energy a few hours after drinking the coffee. The blood sugar level has now dropped because you have exhausted the sugar in your blood and all the symptoms of low blood sugar make you feel this way, then you crave the sweets! Then your body says, gee, I need more insulin, so your pancreas produces more insulin; a very vicious cycle indeed. You will tend to eat more carbohydrates & sweets after drinking coffee. Want to lose weight? Stop the coffee, improve your diet instead.

I've got a link, but it doesn't seem to mention coffee and metabolism.

It does mention almost everything else about coffee, effects on the heart and blood pressure also. With external links.
