I believe it is called faith. Perhaps superstition? Culturally, different populations devise gods or 'God' to explain unanswerable question such as 'how did we get here' and 'what happens when you die'. These beliefs require that one accepts the premise that god actually exists. The changes that occur to the population when standards of worship are applied are religion, and tend to get bogged down in dogmatic rituals and ideals.
While you are alive, You can never honestly know if there is a god or not, and even the zealots who profess belief in a deity ( if they are capable of honesty) will admit that they don't know, but rather believe (with all of their hearts) that there is a god.
The only honest person is an agnostic. That doesn't exclude faith or belief, but it does require that a person admit that they don't know
Think of the atheists as well. They believe that there is no god and are sure that they are also correct, but if they are honest, they will admit that they don't know for sure. They are as a general rule, more able to admit this than the religious types.
The question is a good one that will be eternally relevant, my only belief is that you need to keep an open mind and admit that as a human, you can never know for sure, but rather only believe and have faith that you have chosen a good path. Live well and treat others with respect and humility.

I can not answer for anyone other than myself.
My life depends directly upon something I cannot see: Air Without it, we would die in a few minutes. We cannot see the air, but we certainly know that it exists. If you were to hold your breath for sixty seconds, you would appreciate very quickly the air that you cannot see.We cannot see the wind, electricity, radio, television or radar beams, gravity, magnetic fields, odors, sound waves the list goes on and on.I do not question the reality of these things I can't see because I observe the evidence, the results they produce. In the same way, I know an unseen Creator exists because I observe the evidence, the results of his handiwork. The Bible says: “For his invisible qualities are clearly seen from the world’s creation onward, because they are perceived by the things made, even his eternal power and Godship.”—Rom. 1:20.

I think you believe in God, because you have been told to do so. Well, I would like to believe in God but it is so difficult and if God do exists, it can’t be like we are told and we can’t figure it out as we are too small and our brains perhaps are not design for such thinking yet.
I would like to believe that Jesus once existed, but I can’t find any sources good enough to support the Bible in any way. To me it looks like that it is a Greek influence on the Judaism about 2300 years ago. In matter of fact, Jesus is sometimes telling the very same words like the Greek philosophers did once and word by word.
I think that it was Salus, who later called himself Paulus who made the Christian religion to what it become to be.
Religion is an answer to what we can’t know anything about or a philosophic way of living.

Faith and hope are two things that make humans go on with their life and bring some meaning to our lives. Faith does not necessarily mean faith in God, but believing in God helps you understand your inner self a lot and to be good in all ways. Who said we do not meet God while we are alive. God exists in all good forms and all good deeds. Haven't you ever realised that someone who had helped you in a critical time looks like God? God is everywhere dear and you meet him in all walks of life in one form or another

If one believes that he will meet God after he passes away, what is wrong in believing God while living?

Actually many people have an earthly connection to God through Jesus the Christ and through prayer you can establish communication to God. Therefore he won't be as much of a stranger when you die. The way I think of it is, like having an online friend whom you've never met but you know is there. Then finally one day you meet the person who you've been talking to all along. So maybe it's just something exciting to look forward to.

Most people assume that they will meet "GOD" only after they are free of their mortal body, I don't. As a pagan I believe the Divine speaks to or communicates with us at it's choosing, not ours. It is also my belief that most of us have met the Divine, we are just not at a level at all times where we know when we are in the presence.

This is why ritual is important to those of us who are pagan, it is at those times when we know that we are open to that often quite voice or that sometimes not gentle prod in the right direction.

Not necessarily true. God is just as much present in our lives today as when we actually meet him face to face. If you have a close relationship with him, where it's personal, you can't help believe in Him because He is so evidently close in your everyday life. I'm not sure if that answered your question, but hope so! One of my favorite websites to go to for questions like this is Relevant Magazine...it's www.relevantmagazine.com

Why do you assume this?

I met God. Others have met God. It is possible.

Of course, when you do meet - it is no longer belief that God exists - you know God exists.

God sent His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ, to the earth as a man. You can know God now by reading about Jesus in the Bible. Jesus is God in the flesh. Jesus has many benefits for you now in this life. He says that if you seek Him you will find Him. God bless you.
