When I think of family reunions I am reminded of the talks and laughter and good advice that took place in the kitchen. The food at the reunion is important this helps draw and bridge family. I would suggest and dishes that has been passed down over the years. Or ask family members to make what ever dish they are famous for that most cannot get enough of. Barbeque is a great idea because a look of fun and memories does take place over a nice warm smoking grill. Some things we recently had at our family Reunion and there were no complaints was barbecue, fried chicken, potato salad, mac and cheese, different rice dishes, green beans, greens, cakes, pies, hot dogs and hamburgers, baked beans, ribs, barbecued chicken, pasta salads, cole slaw.... A variety makes the difference the more you can choose from and keep in mind those who maybe diabetics or have high blood pressure. Have plenty of games and music and enjoy your family.

At my family reunions we usually have foods like bbq, baked beans, and foods like that. But last year I brought chilli instead of the traditional food that we always have and everyone loved it. Heres the recipe I use:

Slow-cooked Chilli

2lb ground beef
1/2 C. chopped onion
2 garlic cloves, minced
2 cans (16 oz each) dark red kidney beans
2 cans (16 oz each) light red kidney beans
1 can (15 oz) pizza sauce
1 can (4 oz) chopped green chilies
4 tsp. chilli powder
1 tsp. dried basil
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 tsp. pepper

In a Dutch oven cook the beef, onion, and garlic over medium heat until meat is no longer pink; drain. Transfer to a 5 quart slow cooker; stir in the remaining ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 6 hours. This will make about 14 servings.

Its a little time consuming but its worth it! Hope this helps...

My grandmother always did a buffet style spread which feeds lots of people with VERY little effort. It is a little more expensive (as already prepared deli items always are) but it is worth the expense.

Try a variety of deli meats and cheeses with an assortment of nice breads for samwiches. Provide all of your usual like lettuce, tomato, onion, and condiments. Go for salads of all kinds...macaroni, potato, pasta, etc. Deviled eggs, pickled/red beat eggs are good. Pickles and olives are also nice. Chips and pretzels assure that everyone gets something they want. Then do a desert. Just pick one kind and make 2 OR pick 2 different types to cover all bases and make one of each.

Seriously...who wouldn't be happy with a spread like that?

WOW I love this one! Up until last year, we had a huge family reunion EVERY year for the past 30 years. One of my favorites...wait, let me tell you, that everyone was called a month ahead of time and asked what they would like to bring... it was definately a family affair. Even the ones that travelled from afar, pitched in, stopping on the way to get ice and snacks. Some of the family favorites were eggplant parmasean. something my aunt tressa was the BEST at! She also made a ton of chocolate chip cookies ( 1/2 for eating, 1/2 for our 'auction'). My aunt Dee always made her secret recipe baked beans. I always bought a few eye of rounds, slow cooked them the Italian way ( for a bunch of Germans!) the day before, and made it specifically for sandwiches. I also made brownies or some sort of finger dessert. My brother always made fried chicken. Did it also the day before and just panned it up in throw away containers. My sis made funky salads. Each year, something new. Antones salad one year, taco salad, layered salad. She also baked a cake or something yummy. My mom, always in charge of potato salad. cousins and uncles and other aunts bought dinner rolls, made something ethnic, keilbassa and kraut, halushki, some brought veggies and dip... its so fun to get together and just enjoy the day and the family and catch up. Oh.. my aunt Eileen always made a crock pot full of sausage and peppers... oh man, I miss being home. Good luck to you. And have FUN, most of all!! Happy Holidays!

There is always the gold standard of macaroni and cheese. Very simple and always goes over well. Baked beans, chilli, Hormels little smokies can be served two ways; one is cooked in bar-b-que sauce and the other is to wrap in biscuit dough(if using pillsbury biscuits - seperate into thirds and use one piece to wrap each smokie then place on cookie sheet and bake 10 - 15 mins) Good Luck!

Somehow this seems weird....a fiance's family having you spend your money to feed their family at a reunion?? there's no count of people to plan for? ...and what's a "good bit of stuff"? I can see bringing a dish to pass (as reunions like to go)...but to throw this all in your lap sounds weird (especially being "new to the cooking world", among other things!). And if you have "no idea why" and are not speaking up and standing up for yourself.....I can see why they take advantage of you. Tell them you can contribute ONE dessert....and let them handle their "FAMILY reunion".

Macaroni and cheese, chocolate cupcakes, green salad, corn bread muffins, chili beans, baked beans, hot wings, veggy tray(different veggys sliced up with ranch dressing to dip)red beans and rice, grilled sausage,or a big pot of corn on the cob.I am thinking of easy and bulk. You could also make meat trays for them to make sandwiches.A big potato salad will fill them up.Good luck with the reunion and food.....
